Will McCain Use Gustav for Politics?
McCain is considering giving his acceptance speech from the hurricane "devastation zone"!

I cannot imagine a more craven manipulation of a potential tragedy than utilizing resources in a devastation area for a strictly partisan activity.

Is there no bottom to what this guy will do to get elected?

McCain was scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech Thursday but now may do so from the devastation zone if the storm hits the U.S. coast with the ferocity feared by forecasters.

7. How will Americans react?
I think this would be very hard to do without coming across as opportunism. He'll really have to do some good there for it to be worth it (for NOLA) for him to be there. Otherwise it's just a photo op, and that would not be so good for him. But I'm trying to see what possible good he could do there. He's not the president, he's not in FEMA, he's not a senator from the region, they don't need any bomber pilots, he's not physically up to helping with supplies. I wish they wouldn't go there. Just do a low key convention and let people try to salvage their lives.

8.  But how much can he really say?
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 11:27 PM by 4themind
He can't attack Obama from that setting, that would make his numbers go down even more (Even Shrubya didn't attack Democrats from Ground Zero that day), so at best he can only do one of the things that conventions should do, making a case for himself, but not also making the case against his opponent. But again in making the case for himself, what is he going to talk about? It'd be inappropiate for him to talk about anything other than hurricane relief but what is he going to say for 30 minutes? Shrubya is in charge of the rescue effort, not him, and he's taken virually no leadership stance in the senate or much during the campaign. What new solutions can he offer that don't involve governemnt spending/expansion of government which is not a theme that is a unifier for his base. They'd better have a good plan for this, as it is it comes off as a last minute adjustment to avoid a bad news cycle, much like his V.P. pick. It's really a defensive move more than anything else in my view, to avoid being seen as partying during destruction, it's not going to give them the type of unfettered bounce that they truly wanted, not in my view anyway. And again everything above assumes that something doesn't radically change or weaken Gustav's projections, which I hope against hope does occur

13. Has he lost ALL of his senses?
He will be getting in the way of valuable resources for his photo op! And it is the lowest form of pandering. Unless he's there to help, he's in the way.
