My BIL just threw a wall-eyed fit after initiating a conversation
which began with the question "So, what do you think about McCain's VP pick." I told him about the wolf pups and the pregnancy and the debt she left as mayor. He said "What's wrong with killing wolf puppies?"

I told him what I thought of her and he jumped up and started jumping around and screaming how it's "our" fault things are so bad and "fuck you" as he stormed out.

You see, he actually BELIEVES that fox nooze tells him all he needs to know to make a formed opinion and accuses me of hitting him over the head with the fact that they only tell him what they want him to think and he screams that he gets enough to form his own independent opinion. He doesn't have a computer and watchs Fox religiously.

I'm really shaking right now and upset because all this took place here in my office as he was visiting in my home. Now I'm livid and if I go across the parking lot to let him have a piece of my mind, we'll both end up hurt (he can be violent) and in jail.

19. yes, it's gross
and it's so not sportsman-like. what a waste of plane fuel.

I watched that little youtube clip last night with my two sons and we decided we'd like to see her run through the snow while people shot at her from planes....but then, that wouldn't be too nice, I guess....

14. I know. And that's what's so upsetting about the whole thing.. Because
he is a dime a dozen down here and everywhere I've been Fox nooze is there, feeding their poison to people who are convinced they are fair and balanced and if you challenge them (some of them) this is what happens.

And they are ALL going to vote for the mccain/palin ticket.

I'm literally terrified that they could acutally pull it off.

30. relax
Texas will go for mccain. That's a given. It doesn't matter how many of them there are, how wacko they are, how much bs they spew. There are more of them in Texas than there are of you. So don't waste your energy worrying about it. Just root for our guys in Ohio, and Indiana, and Pennsylvania, and Virginia, everywhere it is still a race. I am in Illinois, and will not be spending a lot of time campaigning locally for the same reason (only reversed).

7. I'm dreading talking to my brother, who I love dearly,
because he lives in Wasilla, Alaska and loves, loves, loves Sarah Palin. He was gushing about her about 9 months ago or so and so I knew who she was when the news went out the other day.

I'm sorry that you've had this bad shit happen with your BIL. It sucks. I hope that the rest of your night goes better.

24. Thanks. My stomach is in knots and I'm still shaking. And supremely
angry that he disrepected me in my own home like that. He would NEVER tolerate such behaviour in his home. And, he is not the type to admit being wrong or apologize.

10. All you did was answer his questions honestly
If he got himself in a lather and stormed off, let him go cool off or stew in his own juices.

But do leave it alone as others have advised.

15. When they get like that, then that means they know what you are saying is true
and they are going through a grieving period, with the denial, anger, depression, and finally a resolution and seeing the light. I am sure that there are many out there like that who have knowingly put blinders on their eyes and then realize that they have "been had", but now have no way to save face because they were so obstinate.

his candidate. He said "I punked him", whatever that means. He was genuinely insulted by what I said and reacted almost violently.

20. I have some knock out drag outs..
over the 'media'. I have a friend who is in his 60's and has watched the news for his entire life. We've been having this on-going conversation for years. He used to smirk at me, and look at me like I was nuts when I'd go off about the skewed view he was getting. The day he stopped watching CNN I knew there was hope left in the world.

21. Let it go, Texas
He's at the headwaters of Denial and politics aren't what is winding him up. Whatever is, you can't solve it. If he tries to start another political conservation{sic}, just tell him you don't want to talk about it. This certainly isn't worth a fight and jail time.

23. I got into it with a Home Depot employee.
I'm a vendor and spend a lot of time back in receiving. I had gotten along ok with this one fellow until one evening I was there late and he had put on Hannity. We started debating Hannity's bull shit, I unloaded on McCain hypocrisy and then I pushed him to far and got him to admit Obama was a better choice but he admitted he would never vote for him cause of race. I came in last week to find out this guy had been fired. Looks like he shared his racist views with one to many people. Unfortunately it will probably just make him even more racist. I doubt he'll come out of it a better person having learned something.

No bones about it. Stay safe. An argument with an idiot isn't worth it.

Edit to add, I don't know your situation, but I would have a strong tendency to dis-invite him from entering my home in the future.

go all outta control before ya know it.. and I think the best way to handle is to simmer down and take care of yourself. You are the one we need to help in this election. Your bil has big problems and I'm sorry some people are too brainwashed to have rational discussions.

It's so good to have something as cathartic as DU around~ :grouphug:

28. don't know how you kept your cool
I just lost it with an anonymous moran on digg. :-)

they are so mis-informed, I can hardly stand it.

Keep your cool, take care of yourself, he is not worth it.

what you CAN do, is make your case later that until he can respect you in your own home, not invited.

don't do it now, though - he sounds like a real loose cannon (as all those extremists are). they are even more angry now because they sense things are getting out of their control. power doesn't like giving up its power and doesn't go nicely.

watch your back.

29. It's truly scary how they can be so brainwashed by the media.
Keep yourself safe -- if you actually think he will go that apeshit and hurt you, it's not worth trying to discuss it with him, and it annoys the pig, or something like that.. Feel free to vent here, though, we'll be happy to listen!

*hugs*

31. Thank you. And thank you to all who have responded. I've calmed
down somewhat and now I'm left with the worry of having him so closely related. This isn't the first time he has done this. This was strike three. He's out of my life and I have let my household know in no uncertain terms that he is no longer welcome in my home.

I'll be moving to Virginia soon and I haven't been happy with my relationship for a long time. I'm lonely here and feel so out of place. I have no one to talk to. No one around me even cares about my interests or politics nor do most of them even know who's running for president with the exception of Obama. And that's only because Obama is so pervasive. If he was just your run of the mill pol, no one I know would even be able to name the four candidates. My wife is totally disinterested in anything other than gossip and enabling her five grown children, who I helped raise, to remain just that, children. And there's more.

Perhaps it's time to make a new start. Perhaps it's time for change, indeed.
