Canvassing today their was universal scorn for Palin
Canvassing for Nick Leibham CA - 50 found that the people who wanted to talk about Palin were universally aghast about it. Several thought that he lost the election in one day. Many of these were Republicans. No one offered an opinion that it was a good idea and many Hillary supporters were fine the way the convention brought the party together - several were of the opinion that a deal has been made to make Hillary Senate Leader and that she would become the leader of Congress.

Oh and by the way working hard in Duke Cunningham's old district we must be doing something right because

Vice President Al Gore is coming to help Nick Leibham Congressman from CA - 50 (San Diego North County)

He will be here for a $ 1000 per person fund raiser for Nick on September 20th. Anyone interested in attending PM me.

1. Al Gore! That's huge news. I don't think Francine Busby
had anyone with that name recognition on her behalf. I worked on Mike Byron's campaign back in 2004 :-).

3. Busby was a very weak candidate -- Nick is great

He has 3-4 full time operatives working for him.

Here is an unbeleivable story:

Today I show up to work in Escondido which really isn't my normal area so there is a new - to me - campaign guy there and we start talking - end of a long story he is from MD and the best friend of a guy whose father is my best friend from working in the refugee camps in SE Asia. We both married beautiful educated Thai women and the running joke is that my friend's son would marry my daughter. This guy was their son's best friend and new all about the running joke that included my daughter. Odds in the billions.

7. In CA, anything is possible!
What a cool story! Who knows, maybe you'll be related one day :-).

When we lived in LA back in 1986, it was our first weekend there and we were grocery shopping on a Friday night and ran into a guy that my husband worked with when we all lived in Houston (they worked at Texas Instruments). We had no idea they lived in LA and this was 5 years since they worked together.

I've been a bit out of touch with my Carlsbad/Oceanside friends since moving back to PA. I wish Nick well.

10. Yes. I'm working with the Dem Party, and the focus is on getting Dems to vote
the entire ticket from top to bottom.

I haven't met Nick yet, but some of my Dem buddies are not that pleased with his positions. They feel he is not at all progressive.

Running in a very red district that borders Camp Pendleton and that has not only been red for ever and has received the most RNC $ support in history they want to pick a part a Democrat rather than get rid of a neadrathal like Bilbray?

Here are his statements from his website:

Choice

I understand the importance of reproductive healthcare education, and will always stand up for a woman’s right to choose. Without a consistent position on the right to privacy, the health of our wives, sisters and daughters is jeopardized. I am proud to be endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

To the contrary, Brian Bilbray received a 0.00% rating for his Congressional record on choice from NARAL in 2006 and 2007

Iraq

We need to set a timeline to bring our troops home by the end of 2009. As your Representative, I will strengthen our country by bringing our heroes home.

Healthcare

We must create an affordable healthcare system that increases the options for coverage, encourages competition among providers, and invests in new technologies that bring down the cost of care. Every family that has healthcare now will see their costs go down; every family that needs healthcare will be able to afford it. Every family must have access to a family doctor.

Education

As a former high school teacher, education has always been one of my top priorities. I will be a staunch advocate for improving the education system in America. Our first priority must be a full scale reform of the No Child Left Behind Act. Second, we must renew our federal commitment to early childhood education – the foundation upon which all future academic success is built. Finally, all capable students should have access to an affordable college education to ensure a competitive American workforce. We will make college affordable by offering a tax credit for college tuition and streamlining the financial aid process to make it easier for families to apply.

The events that I have been to (not many I prefer canvassing than the cocktail tour) have been loaded with other Democratic candidates who were running for city council and mayor positions and they were very enthusiastic. His stump speech is a very detailed environmental policy outline, which I am sure you have heard many times, and why many environmental heavyweights including Al Gore are personally coming to CA 50 to put Leibham over the top.

Given that we have one of the worst congressman in California history who has limited education, is not from this district and works as a lobbyist and is supported by lobbyists I am astonished that a single Democrat isn't thrilled that such a progressive is able to do so well in such a red district.

edited to add:

I was at one event in Encinitas that included the entire Democratic team challenging the city council and they made very strong speeches for Nick. Talked to the firebrand liberal who owns the restaurant (forgot his name) after the event for an hour and he couldn't have been happier to running with Nick.

14. Just telling you what I heard from people I trust. Having said that,
nobody is suggesting that any one not work for or vote for Nick Leibham. Of course, they all want to get rid of Bilbray. Obviously, as I gear up, I'll get the necessary information and canvass for him as well as the entire Dem ticket federal, state and local.

13. A female friend who was a strong supporter of Hillary and very skeptical of Obama
called me yesterday in anger about the Palin pick, how she's unqualified and how insulting it is that McCain thinks that women will just vote for an unqualified woman, which suggests that's the only reason they were supporting Hillary.

She was pissed.

Though it was a very big deal to hear that Hillary was a contender for the nomination and did enter into her voting that she was a woman, it was a given before that decision, that Hillary was eminently qualified to hold the office and knowledgable enough to do a good job.

Many of us likewise have been proud and happy to vote for Obama, knowing that it moves this nation forward in terms of a tangible advancement in the dignity of African Americans. However, I think people have felt so good about this because Obama impressed us so much without respect to his racial background. For me, I was reluctant to vote for him because I thought a black man could not win, but when I saw his speech in New Hampshire (when he lost!), I thought to myself, "My God, that man needs to be president, every time I try to convince myself not to vote for him because it's just not gonna happen, he would get stronger, until I just had to do it."

If anything, far from being a token, he had to be better a candidate than most others precisely because race made people skeptical either out of racism or out of fear of other's racism. That's why it was so sweet to see him (to see us, our party really) overcome this.

Sarah Palin pick is to feminism what Clarence Thomas is to affirmative action --it mocks it, it doesn't advance it. It reflects the way Republicans treat women and minorities, and perhaps the way they think of them, as sheep only following members of their gender and/or color. It's no wonder though, the rest of the white party only seems to vote for white males.
