How could Gustav (or any hurricane) affect the GOP convention?
Has this sort of thing ever happened before?

1. if the GOP postpones the convention for a week
the media will spin it as the GOP being sensitive and caring during a time of emergency.

7. "sensitive and caring"
are just words...and no amount of spin will change history. It's more likely that a hurricane will be a clear reminder of how INSENSITIVE and CARING they were during Katrina.

2. I'm not sure.. the reason it is so poignant is that the last time it was such
a monumental fail.. and still 3yrs later, the city is no where close to recovery to withstand a cat 3 or 4 hurricane, esp. if the hurricane hits on the West side of the city..Remember, the last time it really came dead on in MS, not NO.. the flooding happened almost a day later with the levies giving way... Its just a huge reminder of the Republicans failure to provide safety and action. People were left stranded for days..

3. It's actually Katrina that's affecting the GOP convention.
They can't appear to be partying and ignoring New Orleans like they did three years ago.

Oh, and it's never happened before, but then again no President has ever let a city drown like that, either.

4. It will remind people of Bush's colossal fuck-up during Katrina,
as well as diverting the attention of the media from the convention to the hurricane.
But for the sake of the people in that area, I sure hope the thing dissipates before it can do much damage.

6. it will
split the medias attention and bring to mind Katrina....and it looks bad to be out partying while that kind of thing is hitting.

Lets hope Fema and NO are ready this time and everyone will be ok.

11. It will also remind everybody of how Bush....
...has made very irresponsible choices in the people he hires to very important jobs: Brownie. Another thing McCain has in common with Bush!!

9. They Really Can't Postpone It

That would just shorten the general election and give Obama's speech more time to sink in. Plus, there are ballot deadlines to consider, and many lost dollars if they postpone. The XCel Energy Center (love that corporate shillname, always have, but it's so ironic for this particular convention) may not even be available next week.

13. According to the WaPo they are considering canceling....
My guess is thats there best option, however because of the timing it is going to be difficult to postpone it, and at great expense as well.

snip>Republican officials said yesterday that they are considering delaying the start of the GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul because of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is on track to hit the Gulf Coast, and possibly New Orleans, as a full-force hurricane early next week.<snip
