John McCain disappointed many Utahns when he bypassed Mitt Romney as his running mate. Explanations for why he was overlooked vary, but few think Romney's political life is over.
"All of us would have loved it if he picked Mitt because we love Mitt. Let's be honest," Republican Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch said Friday.
Romney's business acumen, proven record with Republicans and presidential look kept him on McCain's short list, but his personal wealth may have been his undoing, observers said.
Earlier this month, McCain told a reporter he owns seven homes, prompting criticism that his wealth distances him from the average American.
Romney, whose worth is estimated at more than $200 million, owns four homes - technically five because two are paired together in New Hampshire - a fact that could have led McCain to reconsider. "The housing remark actually hurt Romney," said Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University political science professor. "It was just setting up a Democratic attack on the Republicans as the party of wealth, the party not open to voters in Pennsylvania or Ohio. He would have just fueled those attacks."
Hatch agreed McCain likely worried about having two multimillionaires on the ticket. http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_10342962Obama played it perfectly. They have been efficient in their attacks. Rarely throwing a first punch. The way they pounced on the "Homes" gaffe, I have to think they knew they were knocking Mittens out of the spot for good.
