when/why was NYC chosen for the RNC?

I am befuddled as to why. Was it another gargantuan mistake by the fools on the hill or is there some sinister reason for this - re: crack some hippie skulls?

1. It was chosen after the 9/11 attacks.....

To try and get a bump off our pain. It'll be a bonus if the protests get ugly and the media makes it look like terrorists have taken over the streets. (Remember..they've hated NY for awhile, and believe me, it's mutual)

But it makes a point that it was soon after 9/11 to take advantage of the sitution. This was Karl Rove's idea.....

yes, just kidding. Although I'll bet it was being discussed somewhere. I think at one time they were talking about having Bush participate in a cornerstone-laying (or groundbreaking) ceremony at Ground Zero right at the end of the convention. Later they thought better of that idea. (sorry, no cite)

He said it was a clever plan, and designed to incite some ugly riots and confrontations that would be televised, so that all the anti-Bush people could be portrayed as 'crazy". I'm afraid it may work.
