Newsweek: McCain camp has a “contingency plan” in place regarding to tropical storm Gustav

http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/08/28/mccain-who-can-it-be-now.aspx

<snip>

But the McCain campaign may face a little trouble of its own next week, as a tropical storm (and possible hurricane) Gustav bears down on the Gulf Coast, taking aim at New Orleans as early as Monday. Ironically, that’s the night President Bush is scheduled to speak to delegates at the GOP convention in St. Paul. So far, GOP officials are waiting to see what happens with the storm, but a McCain aide, who declined to be named, says the campaign has a “contingency plan” in place and is examining various scenarios including possibly postponing aspects of the convention. “We’re monitoring the situation very closely, and we’ll make plans accordingly,” McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker told NEWSWEEK.

2. it shouldn't be hard to rearrange things at the convention--since it looks like very few people will
be there anyway. how many senators have sent their regrets?

5. How do you postpone certain aspects of the convention?
I think this is their excuse to get out of having a full convention. They have nothing and they know it, so cut it down to one day, with the roll call and McCain acceptance speech and then end it.

But it isn't like they can have part of the convention now and then later in September.

19. Maybe they never planned most of the convention in the first place.
Given the way McSame has run his campaign, I'd be surprised if they have any interesting speakers lined up. Who do they have? Lieberman? Yeah, what a headliner.

Now the Democrats have had a solid week of incredible speeches and the Rethugs are facing the prospect of a totally lame convention of their own, so they're grabbing any excuse (there's a hurricane a-comin!) to save face. Because we all know how hard they worked during Katrina. :eyes:

The truth is that there was nothing much planned to begin with.

6. Let me guess...it involves cake?
McSame and W will eat cake while celebrating the resiliency of Trent Lott.

Larry Craig will be appointed Bathroom Czar, in charge of finding restroom facilities for Gulf Coast refugees.

A year, in fact. I can tell you they won't be able to rearrange much. Not like they can just come back to St. Paul and say, "Hey, we need your arena four weeks from now.".

17. Having attended and coordinated hundreds of trade shows and conventions...
I agree, fully.

This is a bullshit smokescreen.

What are they going to do? Leave all of those delegates stranded?

Void all of those supplier contracts?

No way.

Or maybe LittleMan can exonerate and pardon the whole damned lot.

8. LOL at the idea that *ss is not going to speak because of it. He wants
to stay as far away from NO so he is going to stay in DC instead of St. Paul where he is halfway there.

13. No worries GOP. We'll clean this up too. We're getting use to it by now
no really, have yet another party when NOLA gets harmed. I'm sure McCain can supply another cake and Bush can pretend he's playing a guitar. After all, for 5 and a half years, McCain didn't have cake so, you know...

14. I think they know they cannot top this convention
They couldn't top it even withOUT Obama's speech tonight. With it - they should just give up. Go through the motions of nominating McCain, he'll do his little song and dance, and then be done with it.

15. Most of the oil platforms in the Gulf Coast will be empty...
So they be available for the convention to move there. And they're owned by the RNC's corporate sponsors so I'm sure they wouldn't object.
