The Flip-Flopper in Chief strikes again!
* is back to saying things to appease the environmentally conscious republicans to save their votes. But, after he reneged on his last campaign promise to cut CO2 production, will anyone believe him this time?

Bush u-turn on climate change wins few friends

Gary Younge
Friday August 27, 2004

The Guardian

In a dramatic reversal of its previous position, the White House this week conceded that emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases were the only likely explanation for global warming.
Citing the "best possible scientific information," an administration official, James Mahoney, delivered a report to Congress that essentially reversed the previous White House position set out by George Bush, who had refused to link carbon dioxide emissions to climate change.

Two years ago, when his administration last published a document claiming that global warming over the last few decades had been prompted by human behaviour, Mr Bush dismissed it as something "put out by the bureaucracy".

One of Mr Bush's first acts on the international scene as president was to refuse to ratify the Kyoto treaty, which aimed to cut emissions by 5.2% from 1990 levels by 2012 - prompting outrage throughout the world.

1. He brings "pandering" to a whole new level...
This couldn't be any more transparent if it were made of micron-thick glass.

5. You mean the "Vacation President"
Does he have the energy to Flip-flop?

Even at that he's been known to make major mistakes and stick to them no matter what. It's called vision and leadership.

Are you sure this story is accurate?

6. Ugh.
I love how the Clear Skies initiative, on the surface, called for reductions in air pollution...but then it grandfathered almost every violating power plant and factory, and gave them a free pass for..I don't even remember how many years. 2015?

At which point a republican-controlled house or senate (or both, dear God no) would renew the exemptions for another decade, most likely.

I still haven't seen a really good, comprehensive, concise listing of Bush's flip-flops. You could look anywhere. Clear Skies, No Child Left Behind, his stand on States' Rights v. gay marriage, the 9/11 Commission, hunting Bin Laden, compassionate conservatism..

9. Ooh.
I hadn't seen this one yet. It needs a good update for the recent events, but this is nice and concise and easy for idiot republicans like my father to comprehend.

And it has links for the sources. That's key. Thanks.

8. this was predicted as his usual mo
trash everything to hell, get what you want ruthlessly, then when it comes time for election, renege on it all and pretend you have had an epiphany. This of course is to get voters to have faith in him and not change horses in the middle of the stream

He has lied way too much and has pulled so much crap over the eyes of the people that this will not work this time. This is not Texas revisited. He is playing with the big boys now and has just lied so much that he now looks like an ass. Further those who support him, in spite of the lies, look like bigger asses.

10. He then denied this new report as well - his quote in the NYT
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 02:25 PM by hatrack
EDIT

"On environmental issues, Mr. Bush appeared unfamiliar with an administration report delivered to Congress on Wednesday that indicated that emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases were the only likely explanation for global warming over the last three decades. Previously, Mr. Bush and other officials had emphasized uncertainties in understanding the causes and consequences of global warming.

The new report was signed by Mr. Bush's secretaries of energy and commerce and his science adviser. Asked why the administration had changed its position on what causes global warming, Mr. Bush replied, "Ah, we did? I don't think so."

Scott McClellan, Mr. Bush's press secretary, said later that the administration was not changing its position on global warming and that Mr. Bush continued to be guided by continuing research at the National Academy of Sciences."

EDIT

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/27/politics/campaign/27bush.html?hp

Oh, no, I'm sorry, he didn't deny or lie - he "misspoke".

He'll continue to be guided by continuing research at the National Academy of Sciences and by referring to continuing research whenver possible until crops fail and ice caps melt.
