I believe he battled the Vietcong which was South Vietnamese who supported the communists.

It is more likely that he was facing NLF guerillas (falsely called "Viet Cong," which was a RVN-created slur, meaning, approximately, "Vietnamese Commie," designed to twist the popular support for the Viet Minh after the usurpation of the 1954 Geneva Conference by the US imperialists and their comprador allies in the southern part of the country).
