What a difference a week makes

Well, Republicans, you have four days to reinvent your candidate and your failed party. Your little circus in St. Paul has to follow a Democratic convention that showcased our destiny and our longing for all we lost in two disastrous terms of cynical ideology and political puppetry.

You have to rally behind a candidate that most of you have little enthusiasm for and a running mate who will be “dumber” to his “dumb” or “tired” to his “old.” You have to act as though you have no shame at the most shameful chapter in our shared history. You have no choice but to embrace the very fools who have brought us so low.

Your candidate has a compelling story but it is not one of greatness but of bad luck turned to good luck. Getting a SAM up your tailpipe is what his fellow aviators called “the breaks of Naval Air”. His survival in enemy hands was assured by his notorious lineage more than it was his personal courage and iron will. John McCain was a failure in the family business before and after Hanoi. It wasn’t until one of his targets of opportunity turned out to be a wealthy beer heiress that he saw a chance to cash in on his undeserved notoriety.

You’re going to have to steal this one with the whole world wise to your game. If you have a plan to win in the face of what we have been watching this week, it will have to be ingenious and unbelievably devious. I have a nagging fear that you have no stomach to clean out the stables fouled by Bush, Cheney and the legions of incompetents who got us here. We’ll probably see next week that, like your lackluster candidate, you’re just mailing this one in.
