John Kerry tried a corn dog yesterday.
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 10:54 AM by goodhue
John Kerry tried a corn dog (with both ketchup and mustard) yesterday while at the Minnesota State Fair. He also chatted with 4H members showing their Gurnsey cows. Just thought you should know.

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/9507820.htm?1c

To be precise, it was a Poncho Dog, neatly dressed in mustard and ketchup by Minnesota Public Radio's Garrison Keillor.

"He's got ketchup and mustard on it — he's got my vote," Danny Norrd yelled as Kerry brandished his corn dog. Norrd, a mustard-only man, said he thought it spoke well of Kerry that he took both condiments.

11. Speaking of corn dogs...
A snip from my Iowa State Fair trip report (in the Iowa forum):

5. Our favorite food booth was "VeggieTables". See, we haven't eaten meat for several years now, and the only time we really crave it is at a fair. The brats and burgers always look and smell great, but what we really miss in corn dogs. Well, the signature dish at VeggieTables is VEGETARIAN CORN DOGS!!! They've been selling them at the ISF for 14 years, and they're extremely popular. This year they sold out after 2 hours on opening day. Anyway, not only were the corn dogs great, but the guy who inherited the stand from his mother lives in Chicago but returns to the fair every year. Nice folks, nice food.

"Senator Kerry created somewhat of a local scandal in Philadelphia when he ate a cheesesteak with Swiss cheese instead of Cheese Whiz. Apparently, Kerry has just committed another culinary faux pas in yet another battleground state, having put ketchup on a corn dog at the Minnesota State Fair. It remains to be seen how Kerry's unusual eating habits will affect the polls."

49. Hot dog on a stick coated in maize batter and fried in hot oil.
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Corn%20dog

The Corn Dog is a hot dog coated in maize batter and fried in hot oil, although there are baked variations. Originally made without sticks, almost all corn dogs are on now on sticks.

The corn dog was popularized in 1942 at the Texas State Fair when it was introduced by Neil Fletcher.

The first corn dog on a stick was the Cozy Dog and it is still served in the Cozy Dog restaurant in Springfield, Illinois. In 1946 Ed Waldmire Jr. used a batter supplied by his friend Don Strand and used cocktail forks as sticks. Later he patented a device that clipped the sticks and allowed multiple dogs to be dipped in batter and then in hot oil.

A hot dog (or wiener, depending on your vanacular), poked with a stick, coating in a corn bread and deep fried.

Each year at the Iowa State Fair they report how many fried things are on a stick. When members of our republican legislature start making the list, I'll be impressed.

Unlike Cheney, shortchanging the farmer's market.

On edit: I KNEW IT

"Diane Borison, of Frederic, Wis., who was running the booth from whence Kerry's dog came, said she tried to give him the corn dog for free. But the candidate insisted on paying, taking three one-dollar bills from his wallet and leaving the change from his $2.50 purchase.

"He said he had to help stimulate the economy," employee Jodi Henninger said. "He was pretty laid back. He didn't act like, 'I'm all famous.' "

65. Keillor put the ketchup and mustard on Kerry's corn dog!
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 12:14 PM by goodhue
Keillor campaigned with Kerry yesterday. The town hall meeting was in Anoka, Keillor's home town. Keillor also accompanied Kerry to state fair. In fact, Keillor put the ketchup and mustard on Kerry's corn dog! The corn dog was properly prepared by Minnesota standards, where ketchup and mustard are both expected as corn dog condiments.

Here is Pioneer Press on Keillor dressing the corn dog . . .

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/9507820.htm

During his hour-long visit, Kerry shook hundreds of hands, held quite a few babies, patted a few cows and, yes, ate a corn dog.

To be precise, it was a Poncho Dog, neatly dressed in mustard and ketchup by Minnesota Public Radio's Garrison Keillor.

67. Carry a big stick!

70. Good pic

I like Kerry when he's "outside the box" a little bit. Hanging out in a barn with cows really works for JK.

74. Look at all the people trying to get his picture!
And look, no chains or ropes dividing him from the "commmon folk." It's amazing!

I love John Kerry.
