34. I can respect that
If I were an Obama delegate and Hillary had gotten the nomination, I would still want to cast that symbolic vote for him at the convention...I am glad this is happening and I think it gives Obama more legitimacy...now it makes it harder for her supporters to claim "buyer's remorse" and claim that the delegates were not able to vote the way they wanted.

32. It's not just the boost to her and her supporters. It is recognition of the historic
nature of this Democratic campaign for both candidates. I never thought that in my lifetime I would see a black man or a woman of any color be seriously considered for nomination for the office of the President of the United States. We should all be proud of this campaign regardless who we originally supported in the primaries.

them to vote for Obama. But she threw everything towards Obama. She did good.

5. That's how the process works
to be entered into nomination, a candidate must be formally nominated by someone on the floor.

It's not a big conspiracy, just the rules.

22. She's nominated
Because she deserves to be nominated. People who came in farther behind that she did have been nominated in the past. If you would have asked me this just a few weeks ago I would have had a completely different opinion but not now. I found out something about myself last night. I found out that I believed certain things about her because I would read things and hear things she has said that fed into my perception of her. I saw a different side of her last night. The side of her that I didn't like in the primary was that of a figter and I had issues because she was going up against who I wanted to win and I took a side.

Last night I think I moved past JUST being a Obama supporter I became more of a democrat first. I never thought I would feel this way.

14. Right now
I'm thinking that we should do all and only that which is instrumental to defeating McCain. If nominating Hillary brings about unity, then we should do it. If it's irrelevant because we are already unified, then we shouldn't.

26. What's the big deal back in the old days
the nominee was chose in a back room by the party leaders. Myself I still think we would stand a better chance of winning if Hillary was the Potus nominee and Obama was VP. Flame me if you want but the way it's going so far I think I will be serving up crow in November. I will vote for Obama but I don't think he can carry Ohio, Florida and any of those western states that some believe are in play.

27. Again???? This is the first...
...time. She is presumed to not win...Barack is presumed to win (hence, 'presumptive nominee' title).

Primary elections elected these delegates who are today finally casting their vote to NOMINATE a Democratic candidate. 2118 votes needed to win. If neither gets that on the first vote, they will vote again...but that is unlikely.

28. This must be your first convention.
For years I remember keeping a tally sheet like a baseball game, toting up the votes from each state like stats. It was very exciting.

I'm pumped now from watching our great party where the two candidates receiving these votes are an African American and a woman. I just saw Arkansas, where Hillary won 70%, give her a tribute and say they were following Hillary's wishes and casting all their votes for Obama. The candidates have got it. Now if the naysayers here on DU would just get on board.

The evil just shot out of her eyes while she was at the microphone with the NY delegation! When she said "Madam Secretary, I move that the roll call be suspended an that this convention nominate Barack Obama by acclamation!"

Scaaarrrryyyy! The death rays were shooting everywhere! What evil is within "this woman"?????? The party may NEVER recover from this.

Plus it gives opportunities to states like Arkansas to change their votes in unity by putting their entire slate on Obama.

45. It's theater.
Only part of it is support for her ego and future political prospects. I understand completely her not wanting simply to be made to disappear as the other candidates did. Mostly, it's because Democrats are supposed to listen to all voices--and let's face it; the wonks/cheerleaders who attend conventions enjoy the excitement.

As has already been pointed out, it gave delegates a chance to change their minds, and in the end we had near-unanimity for Obama.

48. Transcript of Hillary's nomination of Obama
“With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let’s declare together, in one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our President. Madame Secretary, I move that the convention suspend the procedural rules and suspend the further conduct of the roll cal vote — all votes cast by the delegates will be counted — and I move Senator Barack Obama of Illinois be sleceted by this convetion by acclamation as the nominee of the democtaric party for president of the United States.”
