Steel Yourselves; Bigger Challenges Ahead
Folks, the doom and gloom must be put asunder by sheer will and faith, if necessary. Next week is going to be a hard hit. Bush isn't going to show up drunk at the convention and he isn't going to make some election-losing faux pas. In fact, it's going to be "The performance of his life," America will be told.

His campaign will be described as re-energized and re-focused around his bold new vision. We won't hear the Bush we've come to expect. He'll be reborn. He'll rhetorically move to capture our high ground with new initiatives on health care, poverty, global warming and energy independence -- and the media will eat it up, wring their hands and ask "What will the democrats do now?"

And what will we do? Wither and moan from the worst body blow we've had since the Shrub took office? Maybe. But I hope not. Our character is about to be tested. How will we respond to being down 10 points in the polls? For all the work we've done, the highest, steepest mountain is just around the next bend. Are you ready?

1. Ready.
Ready to examine every word said there, and to debunk all the lies.

Ready to e-mail columnists and commentators. Ready to write LTTEs.

Also, my county's Democratic party headquarters is having an open house this weekend. I will be ready to speak intelligently to anyone who decides to wander in.

6. Kerry has been at this game for decades.
He's ready and then some. Kerry ready or not, what are you going to do to help him win?

3. If Kerry can keep the debates
from being pre-rehearsed, scripted affairs, we'll be ok.

5. I don't think the RNC is going to give Bush a 10 point bounce
He may get a little bounce out of it, but I think people are finally starting to wise up.

As far as the media bias goes, you're probably right and that's probably where Bush will get his little bounce from. But I think Kerry knows how to get his message out there despite media bias. I think we'll come out of the RNC okay.
