Bush Plans Legal Action on Anti-Kerry Ads
In an interview with the New York Times, Bush said he thought Sen. Kerry should be proud of his record. "No, I don't think he lied," Bush said. But the paper, in a report on its Web site, said Bush refused to condemn the advertisements.
The Bush campaign said it would file its lawsuit in federal court to try to force the Federal Election Commission to crack down on the ads. Campaign chairman Marc Racicot said "courts can move with extraordinary speed," but the case could still bog down and have little impact before the Nov. 2 election.

Bush can ill-afford to alienate McCain, who is an enormously popular figure within segments of the Republican Party as well as among independent and swing voters who may determine the outcome of the election. So far, Bush has only issued a blank condemnation against all outside groups funded by unregulated soft money.
The White House is trying to deflect charges by Kerry of collusion between the Bush campaign and the Swift Boat Veterans. But its case was hurt Wednesday when a top lawyer for the Bush campaign, Benjamin Ginsberg, resigned after disclosing he was providing legal advice to the group. Records show the Swift Boat group has received funding from long-time Bush supporters and one ad features veteran Ken Cordier who was on a Bush campaign committee until last week, when he was forced to quit.
