9. If you only read Matthews' column...

...that used to run in the San Fran Comical, and never watched the caricature of himself that he plays on TV, you'd not be surprised. It's always been painful to watch him because of the discrepancy.

He's battled drink, and depression, and it can't help either one when he sits down to measure what he is, against what he was, and what he appears to be.

I expect seeing Teddy touched him off -- both men with more than their share of the woulda's-coulda's-shoulda's.

He's something of a tragic figure.

This is how I know that the country is undergoing a sea change. He's only flipped around because the weather has changed direction and now blows from right to left, gathering up tumbleweeds with no definite view and pushing them to the left. He will survive the fall of Limbaugh and Hannity and the rise of Olberman and Maddow simply because he can change like a chameleon. Zelig has nothing on him.
