This is Wayne Shorter's Birthday.

No Jazzman could clain Miles Stature. Wayne is to the Saxophone what Miles was to the trumpet. I got to see Wayne live once in San Antonio right after Katrina. I felt like I was in New Orleans on that day. Miles , Wayne , Barack all great Americans.

1. *cough* Coltrane! *cough*

Don't get me wrong, Shorter is amazing, but you'd have to put Coltrane on at least the same level as far as saxophonists. 'A Love Supreme' and 'Ascension' are so far out of this world that they almost constitute their own genre - then again, the same could be said of 'Bitches Brew.'

2. Coltrane and Miles though had differences.

But that is like saying Coltrane challenged Miles. Trane was the inovator of our time. As a sax player yeah nothing to defend myself with. Barack is more like Mr.PC.

3. Hell yeah.

In the end though, its Shorter's compositions that are going to be his legacy. Yeah, he is a unique and intense player but its tunes like Footprints, Nefertiti, and Angel Eyes that he will be remembered for.

I'm hoping that Herbie Hancock and Wyane get to play at the inauguration! It's gonna swing hard!!!
