The Democratic Party had the best field of candidates EVER during any primary
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 05:06 PM by IWantAnyDem
I'd say, of the eight (Tom Vilsack had dropped in February), six stood a damned good chance this time last year (Kucinich really never stood a chance. His politics are about a century ahead of his time).

Of those six, I would be proudly standing here in support of any of them today had they won.

For the first time in my life, the candidate I supported throughout the process won.

I'm a bit in shock of that because it's a brand new experience for me.

I look back to February in the primaries. At any point during Barack Obama's winning streak had he lost a single race, it probably would have spelled doom for his campaign. Those were the odds he was up against at that time.

Had that happened, I would be here now as a proud Hillary Clinton donor and supporter, ready to take on the most misogynistic and neo-conservative candidate ever produced by the Republican Party.

Yeah, that's right, no matter how Hillary Clinton would have won the primaries and no matter what had been said about my candidate by her surrogates and supporters, I'd be a proud Hillary Clinton supporter had things been different in February.

The stakes are too high for intra-party bickering. Let's look at what would happen in McCain's America:

1) Women will be forced to carry all pregnancies to term.
2) Miscarriages will all be investigated as potential "murder" cases across the country.
3) Birth Control will be illegal.
4) It will be legal for companies to pay women 60% of what they pay men for the same job, and will be considered routine policy within three years.
5) 75% of the country will have no health care. Those who do will be socked with taxes because it will be considered taxable income.
6) There will be at least two additional wars, one with IRan and another against Russia in Georgia.
7) Within four years, there will be a nuclear exchange.

I wouldn't give a shit WHO IT WAS going against McCain.

McCain is WORSE THAN BUSH!

1. However, one of our "major" candidates would have destroyed the party's chances in November.
I still can't get over how the selfish ambition one particular ex-senator had the potential to give us President McCain.

3. Not to me. The truly bravest pols we had were those who faced Bush-Rove at their MOST POWERFUL
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 05:12 PM by blm
You had to be one tough sunnuvagun to stick your neck out in 2002-3-4 when the corpmedia was heavily INVESTED in protecting Bush, and with the last Dem president on TV at regular intervals not only clearly supporting that rat bastard Bush on terrorism and Iraq war decisions but actively DEFENDING him even when we had a Dem nominee leading the criticisms of Bush's policies.

The 2008 primary field had more than half the grass mowed for them before they stepped on the field.

That said, I believe we have a very good ticket that WILL get into the WH with their win intact since wehave had a Dem party chair working for 4yrs to strebgthen party infrastructure in states that had been left to collapse since the mid90s. Unlike 2000 and 2004 where the DNC's lack of interest and lack of preparation allowed the RNC to steal those elections and drag Bush into the WH.

5. Not to nitpick, but Edwards doesn't look like a shining choice anymore
Plus I think that people should be a little bit more humble before declaring "the best ever."

6. Hindsight is 20/20
Given what we knew one year ago, Edwards was a part of the best field of candidates ever.

HAd Edwards won I'd still be proudly supporting the Democratic nominee today.

7. If Edwards had won,
he wouldn't still be the Democratic nominee and there might be a floor fight at the Convention.

8. Can I have a look into your crystal ball? I want Tuesday's MEgamillions Lotto numbers
You don't know that because you don't know that the story would have broken by now.

You don't even know the story would have ever broken before the election because it depended upon evidence gathered after Edwards had dropped out.

Sorry, even though I love Alternative History as a fiction genre (HArry Turtledove ROCKS), we just don't know what would have happened with this skkeleton in that particluar closet because we have no idea if anybody would have photographs. Remember, had Edwards been the candidate and had he met Ms. Hunter after the birth of that child, he would have been escorted by Secret Service agents who most certainly would ahve never allowed any Enquirer writer near the Senator.

9. It would have come out.
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 06:56 PM by tritsofme
Maybe not before the election, maybe it would have happened in 2010, and ruined his presidency and gave control of Congress to the Republicans?

I suppose you're right, it could have been much worse for our party than him losing one presidential election.

And that's why its so horrible that the arrogant bastard even ran for president this time around.

11. It's even more damning if you look at various videos of Edwards
Dan Abrams' show had one particularly damning clip. It was of Edwards accepting a Father of the Year award from some group. On face value, it sounds kind of bad, but his remarks were even worse. He mentioned that he wasn't even the best parent in his home (that part was ok) but then he made a joke about trying to get an open marriage. The joke went over okay, but in retrospect, it was an EXTREMELY hurtful comment to Elizabeth Edwards because this event took place after he had told her about the affair.

10. It was assuming that everything was the same EXCEPT that Edwards had won
Plus even if that assumption wasn't made, you know that the right-wingers would have been pushing that meme non-stop.

Also, just because you have Secret Service doesn't mean that people can't find out about an affair that you have. :eyes:

13. Not only in " McCain's America." Federal judges and SCOTUS Justices serve for life.
