1. He is not retiring.
He is moving to another position.

2. No. And even if he did, it would look like a sheer-desperation choice.

3. Me? I'm very frightened by the idea of two military men in charge of our government!
Granted McCain's military career ended rather suddenly when he found himself an unwilling guest of the "Hanoi Hilton"! But McCain is a huge war hawk--it seems that he thinks all problems can be solved with bombs! YIKES!

I want clear-headed diplomats in charge! Not hot-headed ex-military men with grudges to avenge!

5. I suspect a McCain Petraeus ticket might appeal to the red state crowd. nt

6. So are we to deduce from this that the "red state"crowd would welcome WW III?
How many major target cities (if WW III were to happen) are in red states, I wonder?

This time, I doubt the WW fighting will stay on European/Asian soil! I'm pretty sure we'll suffer some consequences too!

Are voters in our country so stupid that they want to invite this kind of chaos into their lives?

4. That would create a groteque mockery of American politics
Two war dudes ... and that's all they have to offer, yeech!

7. Yes, He has ambitions
and he is a strategist. He might choose to run for VP with the expectation of losing and then positioning himself for 2012 Rethuglican nom.

Petraeus is not a bad guy, per se. While he is not "one of the greatest military leaders in history" he is certainly competent and capable. But he is a noobie on the campaign trail. A VP run would be invaluable experience for him, given his likely ambitions.

8. Petraeus is rumored to be a closet Democrat. Of course McCain could call it a UNITY ticket

9. I give a certainty-factor of .65 to the proposition that he's
a Democrat.

Maybe not a DU kind of Democrat, but that he votes Democratic.

Asked by a Democratic lawmaker a while back why there weren’t more Democrats in the military, General Petraeus smiled slyly and said “there are more than you think.”

10. As Centcom Combatant Commander, Petraeus is probably in one of the Top 6
most powerful positions in the US government.

I doubt he is going to give that up to take a lower % chance on becoming VP.

12. I hope so...
If McCain would put Petraeus on the ticket it would put the war front and center, and this is a losing issue for any Republican. Secondly, Petraeus has no experience on economic issues and Mr. Seven Houses desperately needs someone with knowledge of the economy on his ticket. Petraeus would be a terrible choice for McCain, which is exactly why I hope he chooses him.
