Cyndi Lauper: We Are Not Voting For The American Idol-We Are Voting For The American President
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 11:08 AM by kpete
Cyndi Lauper
HOPE

As I toured all over the country this summer with True Colors, I saw something in the eyes of the audience I have not seen in a very long time, it was HOPE. Each night as I talked about the power of voting, it was evident through their reactions that the crowd wanted to change how this country is run. That is the one good thing that President Bush has done in the past seven years, he has created a movement within the country to change how things are done in Washington DC. But, what mattered to me the most is that everyone cared enough about their own lives and the future to register and vote.

I believe we are at a crossroads and the next ten years will determine the future of this country. Like I said from the stage this is not voting for the American Idol, it is much more important, this is voting for the American President. And now that I'm home again, and off stage, I wonder, will we become the country that respects the diversity that is our backbone or will we continue down this path of the few ruling the many? I wonder to myself are we gonna make that change in a big way and when I think about it I believe that the change can happen in the form of Senator Barack Obama.

Because, America is a quilt of many fabulous fabrics and we have a sorted history that has not always respected that. And because, for far too long groups of people have been singled out and discriminated against simply because of such things as the color of their skin, their religious beliefs or whom they love. And, that these very acts undermine the basic principles this country was founded on, the time has come to finally break down the barriers that keep America from fulfilling its destiny.

...........................

I see in Barack Obama a real fighter for fairness and inclusion, a person who overcame every obstacle growing up to achieve an education and to become the leader he is today. He battles against discrimination of all kinds, from race and gender to sexual orientation and gender identity. He is the most inclusive candidate who has a real chance at the White House that we ever have had. He is a true American who commands respect and more importantly respects Americans - all of us.

All my best,
Cyndi Lauper

I knew Cyndi when we both worked the LI/NYC club circuit in the late 70s/early 80s, and she always knew exactly where she was going and how to get there.

She had one of the sharpest senses of humor I'd ever seen. She couldn't have been as consistently funny as she was without being whip-smart.

11. She's strongly, enthusiastically, endorsing Obama.
I don't know why that would be a reason to denegrate someone.

12. You Know Who Really Got A Kick Out Of Her ???
Johnny Carson. After her first appearance on the Tonight Show, he had her back fairly frequently. She was funny, interesting, and smart, and she cracked Johnny up with her wit.

I think the mammothness of her first hit\video "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" may have caused many to believe she was rather shallow.

Not so.

20. Thanks for bringing that up.

I explained my reasons for voting Republican- they have always been considered friends of the Puerto Rican statehood movement, and when I moved over here, I felt I had to join them for that reason.

If that makes me dumb or stupid, so be it. That was the number #1 issue for me when I moved over here and in Puerto Rico Republicans are seen as pro-statehood.

4. I saw the True Colors show here in Chicago this summer.
Cyndi, who the crowd ADORED, gave a talk about voting this November. And she was quite forceful about getting involved to elect Obama in November.

She is an amazing woman.

8. She's an intelligent woman.
I guess people only think of her and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or whatever. I'm glad people aren't thinking of her now as some fluffy airhead.

I always suspected she is intelligent. Sometimes people connect pop artists with airheads because of Britney and Lindsay and the like. :hi:

I just don't trust Paula Abdul with the Electoral College.

25. Cyndi got a bad rap back in the day
Probably for the following reasons...

1) First hit was called "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (oddly enough not written by Cyndi, or any other "girl")

2) She follows that up with a song about masturbation. Moral majority freaks out. (although Prince had already gone there before)

3) The whole association with WWF wrestling. It's kinda hard to associate deep thinking with all of that, though it's debateable how much of that was Cyndi's doing and how much was her manager/boyfriend at the time (David Wolfe, I think was his name?)

But I honestly thought at the time that in the "Madonna vs Cyndi" war pushed by MTV, that Cyndi would have the best shot at longevity - although I definitely found Madonna more appealing to teenage male lust at the time.

OK so I got that one wrong.... they both stuck around. And both ended up proving far more intelligent than their MTV images would lead you to believe.

28. I saw Cyndi when she opened for Cher in L.A. Let me tell you
she knocked the socks off the audience and had the guts to go into the audience and mingle with the people. They loved her for that. Cyndi's the best and intelligent to boot. You go, Girl.
