Will McCain try to match Biden with Opus Dei Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 11:15 PM by CK_John
Jindal wants to be convinced McCain has a chance before he will leave his Gov gig. I guess we'll find out next friday but be ready for this possibility.

1. No way. That would neutralize the advantage McCain has among closet racists
If he picked Jindal, he'd have almost no chance at all. Jindal was just included as a token minority and to build him up for the future.

11. La has a strange law that requires the Gov be replaced as soon as he runs for fed office.
No chance for him to run and retain his office as Gov.

13. Oh, I get that ...

I was just bemusing the rather lackluster enthusiasm it shows.

Everything about McCain's campaign is negative, right up to his potential choice in running mates.

They're pretty secretive about being members.

14. Yeah ...

He won on what was basically a referendum on the governor who was in place when Katrina hit. He campaigned against Katrina more than anything.

Geez, Katrina really sucked didn't it? Vote for me. I didn't like Katrina either.

16. Here's the deal:
Jindal was a wunderkind, smart guy from Baton Rouge, got a Rhodes Scholarship. Was appointed to a high position in the Gov.'s administration when he was something like 24 years old. That--being a young guy--made him locally famous. Gets a job as a wonk in the Bush Admin. Moves to Metairie--David Duke's district, the only place he could have won a seat in Congress. Loses his first run for Gov against Kathleen Blanco, herself a godawfully bad campaigner. Wins Gov after the discredited Blanco refuses to run again, against a field of Dem nobodies. He has NEVER won a hard race against an even halfway decent opponent. I do hope he is picked as VP nominee, so folks can see just how lame he is.

Indian-Americans break heavily Democratic, but they don't like Biden, and they love Jindal -- could
be a swing demographic.

24. "Despite being heavily religious and having the highest average household income among all ancestry
groups in the United States, Indian Americans tend to be more liberal and tend to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. Polls before the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election showed Indian Americans favoring Democratic candidate John Kerry favored over Republican George W. Bush by a 53% to 14% margin (nearly a 4 to 1 ratio), with 30% undecided at the time."

26. I wouldn't place much faith in these statistics.
Leaving aside the fact that (53+14)<100, Indian-Americans are difficult to poll accurately because we comprise only a small fraction (~1%) of the population, an even smaller fraction of the electorate (a high proportion of Indians are recent immigrants ineligible to vote), and are fairly geographically dispersed.

Judging by the people I know, I think Democrats do have a distinct edge among Indian-Americans, but it's pretty small. In fact, the most politically-active Indians I know are Republicans. Obviously, this is only anecdotal evidence and must be taken with a grain of salt, but I find a 3-1 ratio not to be credible.

Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 11:46 PM by nsd
You might be confusing Indians with Arabs (Michigan does have a big Arab-American population). The states with big populations of Indian-Americans are New York/New Jersey and California. But you can find Indians in all sorts of places. For example, I'm Indian-American and was born and spent my early childhood in southeastern Indiana.

I don't think there's a big enough population of Indian-American voters in any state to really affect the results, especially because Indian-Americans don't normally vote as a block and a lot of people of Indian descent are recent immigrants ineligible to vote.
