Sen. Amy Klobuchar had just given a speech to an empty Senate chamber when her colleague, Joe Biden, gave her a call.
"I walk out, and I thought, 'Well, no one saw that except my mom,' who tuned in to C-SPAN," the Minnesota Democrat recalled of the speech regarding a bill that helped fund 100,000 additional police officers nationwide. "My phone rings, my cell phone, it's at night and it's Joe Biden, like three minutes after I finished the speech and he's saying, 'That was a great speech, good work.' He's just someone who is a very positive guy."
Klobuchar left Saturday to head to Denver for the Democratic National Convention and was thrilled at the selection of Biden, a Delaware senator, as Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.
"Minnesota will love Joe Biden when they get to know him. I can just see him up on the Iron Range right now. He has blue collar roots, he's a very warm person," Klobuchar told The Associated Press on Saturday. "Barack Obama wanted to pick someone, as he's always said, that wasn't a 'yes man.' He wanted to pick someone who would challenge him to be a better president and Joe Biden will do that."
