Hypothetical: Would Obama have gotten better press if he'd announced the pick on Thursday?
the conventional wisdom is to announce a big story on Thursday if you want to dominate the weekend news cycle and to dump it on Friday if you want to bury it.

There's no question that Obama has dominated the news cycle by building suspense. He risks annoying people who are waiting (although, personally, I think only us die hard supporters have been waiting anxiously enough to get annoyed), risks unfavorable speculation about possible candidates he didn't vet, and risks a let down when the pick isn't surprising (if I recall correctly, his campaign has hinted that it won't be surprising).

On the other hand, the coverage seems to have been largely favorable, or at least not unfavorable.

So has it been brilliant or not?

3. I'd guess that, at this point, if his pick isn't amazing many people will be let down no matter what
This stringing it out and stringing it out might have built up interest and excitement for a couple days... but it's gone on too long.

Have there been last minute problems/changes?

7. I think "I don't know how many houses I have"-gate might have made them reschedule.
That is NOT a story you want to step on. Announcing yesterday would have buried the story. Stretching it out a day put more attention on it.
