On what plane of existence does "his wife owns them" count as an excuse---
especially when at least three of them are in a community property state?

1. It doesn't.
Neither does saying that since he was a POW, he deserves a break. The GOP is quickly making that excuse a liability.

4. It's not an excuse. It is lame as hell to try to put it all on the spouse.
His ass is rich. And he collects disability, social security, pension and his regular salary.

6. Pretty lame excuse.
Mr Pip always made more money than me, much more, but the houses he paid for are "our" houses. The cars he paid for are "our" cars. His tools and his model airplanes are "his."

Talk about dodging and weaving. I have receive emails touting Cindy McCain and what a wonderful person she is. That sort of implies conservatives consider her part of the package. That package comes with 10 houses.

9. A Repub. strategist said that the Obama camp is going after Cindy
Since these properties are supposedly part of Cindy's portfolio this is an attack on Cindy.

10. One may still own separate property in a community property state.
For example, if an asset was purchased with separate funds and kept in the name of the spouse who so purchased the asset and maintained with separate funds, the asset is the separate property of that spouse. While the presumption is that an asset acquired from marriage to the date of separation is community property, that presumption can be rebutted by tracing the same to a separate property source and showing that in no manner did the community acquire an interest during the marriage.

a difference. McCain needs to MAN up! who wears the pants, and carries the wallet in his family? he wants to be PRESIDENT. should he be asking his wife for an allowance, or the keys to the family car....I mean plane.....whenever he wants to take a little spin?

IOW, it shouldn't matter a whit this time

the key is the hypocrisy of painting Obama as an elitist

not knowing how many houses one owns is a lose/lose situation. I only have four houses, not seven....I mean eight....or is it twelve?

we still don't know

and how many homes are 'owned' by the children? they earned the money for those, surely, didn't they? where DID that LLC money come from?

21. I wonder which children are included
in the Hensley trusts? McCain's two adoptive sons and biological daughter with Carol. The jointly adopted daughter from Bangladesh? Or just the three 'real' kids.

Forgetting about siblings seems to be a Hensley family trait.

13. Community property doesn't mean he owns them.
Even in community property states, not everything is co-owned. Only property acquired while you are married is community property, and even then, it can be separate if the property was inherited or was a gift. There may be other ways, too, at their income level.

I have to say, while I love seeing McCain sweat, this all seems silly to me. When the Republicans were making the same complaints about Kerry, every poster her was screaming "But she owns the houses, not him!" Now we are screaming the opposite. I guess that's a corollary to the old proverb that if you wait on the bank of the river long enough, you will see the body of your enemy floating by.

The part that amuses me isn't how many houses McCain owns, but how stupid his answer was. "I don't know" either makes him look befuddled or so rich he doesn't even care. So he's either addled or his Marie Antoinette.
