Meet Joe Biden - timeline and photos

November 20, 1942
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the first of Joe and Jean Biden's four children.

June 1965
Joe graduates from the University of Delaware with a double major in History and Political Science and enrolls in Syracuse University Law School.

August 27, 1966
Joe marries the former Neilia Hunter.

June 1968
After graduating from law school, Joe begins work as a trial attorney at a law firm in Wilmington, Delaware and serves as a public defender.

February 3, 1969
Birth of Joe and Neilia's first child, Joseph R. "Beau" Biden, III.

November, 1970
Elected to New Castle County Council.

November 8, 1971
Birth of third child, Naomi Christina.

November, 1972
Joe elected as Delaware's U.S. Senator, beating an incumbent Republican. At age 29, Joe was the 5th-youngest U.S. Senator ever.

December 18, 1972
Joe's wife and three children are in an automobile accident while Christmas shopping. Neilia and Naomi suffer fatal injuries, while his sons, Beau and Hunter ( not quite 3 and 4 years old at the time) are critically injured but make full recoveries.

In his own wards: “Let me tell you a little story,” Mr. Biden told the crowd at the University of Iowa. “I got elected when I was 29, and I got elected November the 7th. And on Dec. 18 of that year, my wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree. A tractor-trailer, a guy who allegedly — and I never pursued it — drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family and killed my wife instantly, and killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons, with what were thought to be at the time permanent, fundamental injuries.”

January 5, 1973
After consistent lobbying by Hubert Humphrey and Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield urging him not to resign, Joe is sworn in to the United States Senate at Beau and Hunter's bedside in Wilmington, Delaware.

June 17, 1977
Joe, Beau, Hunter and Jill Joe marries Jill Tracy Jacobs, a school teacher.

November, 1978
Campaign Stage photo Wins reelection to U.S. Senate.

June 8, 1981
Birth of Joe and Jill's daughter, Ashley.

The Bidens campaigning in 1987.

Biden's elder son, Beau, was a partner in the Wilmington law firm of Bifferato, Gentilotti, Biden & Balick, LLC and was elected Attorney General of Delaware in 2006. He is a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard, where he serves in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. He is set to be deployed to Iraq in October.<9> Biden's younger son, Hunter, works as a lawyer in Washington, DC, serves on the board of directors of Amtrak, and previously worked in the Commerce Department.

Since 1991, Biden has also served as an adjunct professor at the Widener University School of Law, where he teaches a seminar on constitutional law.

2. Aw this makes me love Biden more. Does anyone remember his "Bullshit!" moment during the Appeasement
crap that Bush tried to pull? The one that also brought on the awesome smackdown by Chris Matthews on the ignorant RW radio host?

then for some reason, I checked Amtrak, it's 1 hr and 15 min.

9. I read an interview
where Obama describes his current choice and he echoes the clearest rationale I proposed for Biden almost exactly. If not Biden, I will be most strangely mistaken.

16. Joe was so cute when he was little. He seems like such a good Dad too.
Losing his wife and daughter had to be terrible but he picked up the pieces and went on with his life. I had no idea his son was going to Iraq either. This makes me really really like Joe Biden. I hope he is Obama's choice for VP.

21. Biden Is Several Years Older Than Me, But I Remember That Teen-Age Look AND
I coulda easily had a "crush" on him had I been around him back then!! He woulda been "the senior" a "freshman" had eyes for!

Don't know about any other "chicks" from back then, but he was really "cute!"

44. For SURE... Except I'll Not Share "Our" Secret With My Hubby! But He's
5 years older than me and still in very good shape. Through the years, he's only put on about 25 lbs. and he was 6'0" and weighed 165 when I married him. And I still weigh the same as I did back then about 120 lbs., but it's taken some very hard work and lots of dieting! I'm kind of a Vegan though!

AFTER ALL THESE YEARS... Yeah, Baby!

I always say I'm twice the woman I was in college... hehehe

But then I'm twice as contented as I was back then, so I guess it all evens out, right?;)

47. For Sure... AND Experience IS Everything!! My Real Point Was That My
hubby ain't no slouch, but I'm biased! About myself, I have OCD and OBSESS over my weight, and many other things. There ARE draw-backs to being thinner... MORE wrinkles showing and I have NO CHEEKS!! My sisters and daughter are always asking me "what's with the anorexic look!"

Plus, downward gravity doesn't skip over ANY of us! Truth be told, you ain't catching me in broad daylight sans clothes, and many times at night too! I said I didn't gain any weight, that doesn't mean my muscle tone hasn't slipped just like all of us!

But, content and wisdom goes a LONG WAY!!

18. I heard him say that everybody praised him for going home every night to
his sons, but he said the praise was undeserved. He said "I did it for ME. I NEEDED them to help me to keep on going." He was so devastated by the death of his wife and daughter, that he said he saw how despair could make people contemplate suicide as a reasonable option. A loss like that must truly be a dark night of the soul.

that would be a helpful link for us all to have handy.
