Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 10:44 PM by Quixote1818
I have worked with Fundy Christians who absolutely hate the Mormons. Hell, even McCain's Mom ripped on Romney for being Mormon.

Any thoughts on how putting someone who is not a "Traditional" Christian on the ticket will effect things? Seems to me Romney could cost him a % or two. Then again, there are a lot of Mormons across the country that might be more motivated to vote now.

7. I agree. We have to fight fire with fire
Besides, it's their voters who are prejudice, not ours. We are just giving them more info to remind them that they are prejudice.

He's a Morman. Ethyl Morman.

4. Really hard to say
On the one hand, you're right - they absolutely despise Mormons.

On the other hand, they hate Obama even more - many of them still think that he's some sort of communist Muslim Manchurian Candidate.

I have to think that they'd bite their tongues and vote to keep Obama out, not necessarily vote for a McCain/Romney ticket.

6. I'd say that a number of them still have that lust for power
that they'd put their principles aside and vote for Johnny & Mittens. It's either that or stay home. If the conservative fundies stay home this election day you can pass in the songbooks on this election. No way it's even close without the James Dobson brigade.

9. Outwardly, fundie leaders will downplay the differences (like in the primaries)
Inwardly, I see this being a windfall for Bob Barr or whatever is on TV after work on election day, because they'll stay home in droves.

McSame is already too "liberal" for many of their tastes. Romney does nothing to help that. He, too, is perceived as too liberal by many. His "small varmit" act is laughable to the gun crowd, but they're voting for McSame anyway.

Could it win Michigan? Maybe, but it could drive down overall interest in their side 5% across the board.

The only explanation is the money.

10. Oh they hated McCain too. In the end they all fall in line
Republicans and fundies hate so many things that they can't sort them out. In this case they'll choose to hate the black librul more than they would a Mormon. But the GOP base is lockstep enough so that if they go, they'll vote Republican. The only thing is turnout probably won't be as good for a variety of reasons, so many will stay home.

17. Heck I'm not a fundy and I strongly believe Mormons are a cult
We see them all the time around here in Korea trying to "convert" people. I purposly walk away from them and try to avoid them if they start a conversation with me.

20. Fill me in on the Mormon view of Jesus?
Is he God? Is he a prophet? It's all very confusing to me and Mormons often give different answers to the Jesus question.

19. They really don't like the part about people becoming Gods and ruling over their own planet
Not to mention they think Mormons think Jesus was just a prophet and not the Son of God. That pissed them off to no end! I have heard them rip on that many, many times.

I am still unclear on what Mormons think Jesus to be. The bottom line is if the Fundy's don't think Mormons believe Jesus to be God they freak OUT!!!!

21. That's not correct.
Mormons do believe that Jesus Christ, the earthly incarnation of the being called Jehova in the Bible, is the son of Elohim, the creator of earth. Of course they also believe that Lucifer (Satan) is also Elohim's son (and Jehova/JC's brother) so the fundies won't like that part much.

22. Thats what I thought
I use to date a Mormon girl in Arizona and she told me Mormons basically see Jesus like traditional Christians do. I think that the Fundy movers and shakers have created rumors about the Mormon church to prevent the flock from straying because it's always strong Christian types who say Mormons think Jesus was a Prophet and not God.

Thanks for the info.

23. Yes, from experience I can tell you that if Romney is the VP choice,
then McCain will lose evangelical votes. Who knows how many, but he will lose votes and he needs every one he can get from the evangelicals. The most conservative evangelicals flat out believe that Mormonism is a cult and is therefore of the devil. They may not vote for Obama, but they will not vote for McCain if Romney is his running mate. It makes no difference whether we believe it is right or wrong, provable or not, it is what they believe and they will vote accordingly. Also, aside from the Romeny VP possibility, many evangelicals probably don't believe that McCain is really conservative enough for them.
