NYC Greets GOP Delegates With Anti-Bush Signs
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0825-10.htm

A 25-by-75-foot banner that reads 'Save America Defeat Bush,' dwarfs pedestrians and vehicles where it hangs five blocks from Republican convention headquarters at New York's Madison Square Garden, Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004. The sign hangs from the offices of the Unite Here union, which represents 440,000 workers from various industries, including hospitality, gaming and textiles. In case their intention isn't already clear, hroughout the city, activists are plastering not-so-subtle signs, like 'Stop Bush Now,' to greet Republicans swooping into town for the convention, even before their airplanes even touch the ground. GOP Delegates Met With Anti-Bush Signs
by Sara Kugler

NEW YORK - In case their discontent isn't already clear, protesters are spelling it out. "Stop Bush Now" signs and other anti-GOP messages are appearing throughout the city well before delegates arrive for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday.

Bright blue tarps, painted with glaring yellow letters, are going up on dozens of rooftops in Brooklyn, under the flight paths into busy New York airports. Thousands of delegates and convention guests peering down at the city might see messages like "No more years" and "Re-defeat Bush."

"We just hope that they'll look down and ask themselves, 'Why, why do they feel so strongly? Why is it that New York feels this way?'" said Genevieve Christy, who has painted more than 80 banners since thinking of the idea a few weeks ago.

The movement is so popular in her neighborhood that Christy, a 57-year-old consultant, is putting orders on a waiting list. She even brought supplies with her on vacation so she could keep working.

Gotta be the first time in my life I've looked forward to a republican convention. I foresee one helluva spectacle.

3. NYC Police are considering asking delegates NOT to cross the picket lines.

Seeking to turn up the pressure on the mayor, Patrick Lynch, the president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said for the first time yesterday that his union might picket the convention and ask Republican delegates - along with employees at Madison Square Garden - to honor the picket line.

"We're keeping all our options open, and that is certainly an option,'' he said.

Such a move would put Republican delegates in an uncomfortable position because crossing the line might be seen as showing disrespect for the nation's police officers - a group that President Bush's campaign is wooing assiduously. And New York's police officers, like its firefighters, are held in special regard because of their role in confronting the Sept. 11 attack.

Now, THAT would make for an interesting convention!

5.  a NY welcome

In case their discontent isn't already clear, throughout the city, activists are plastering not-so-subtle signs, like 'World Says No To Bush,' to greet Republicans swooping into town for the convention, even before their airplanes even touch the ground.
