PHILADELPHIA -- Comparing the Bush administration to the voyage of the Titanic, Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry said both were over budget, filled with "a lot of wealthy folks squeezing out the middle class" and piloted by a captain "unable to turn the ship away from the disaster in time."

The Massachusetts senator mentioned he saw a replica of the 1912 ocean liner that sank on its first voyage as he entered the Franklin Institute downtown, where he spoke to about 1,500 supporters at an invitation-only fund-raiser. The campaign said the event raised $1.7 million for the Democratic Party.
