The doctor at the press conference indicated that she had very little brain function.
I suspect someone used the phrase 'brain dead' and that started the died rumor.

3. Story up now
Rep. Tubbs Jones dies after brain aneurysm
Cleveland newspaper reports Democrat's death

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio - Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones died at a Cleveland hospital Wednesday after suffering a brain aneurysm, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Tubbs Jones, 58, was taken to the Cleveland Clinic's Huron Hospital in East Cleveland late Tuesday, said hospital spokeswoman Joyce Persuad.

Cleveland television stations reported Wednesday that the congresswoman was taken to the hospital after police found her in a car along a road in Cleveland Heights. Police Chief Martin Lentz did not immediately return a message seeking comment Wednesday.

Whoever leaked the information (obviously not a medical professional) should feel ashamed.

7. They may have removed the ventilator and it may be a question of time
before vital organ functions cease. She may be referred as "brain dead" with minimal brain function but she will not be clinically dead until her heart stops beating. Our prayers are with her and her family.

14. I agree, if she's on life support with minimal brain function, it is not good
It could be that her family hasn't taken her off life support. If she's had minimal brain function for this long the odds are not in her favor.

16. Alive and Dead are indistinct terms these days
She has "very limited brain function" but seems to have kept breathing when life support was removed.

But they don't remove life support within hours of entering the hospital unless you are considered profoundly brain dead--zero hope of recovery.

So though her heart beats, she is in some ways dead. Hence the great confusion in the news reports.

It seems to be one of those very cruel Terry Shiavo situations.

(This is my impression from combined reports. Obviously I am not in the room.)
