Bipartisan Praise From Bill Clinton

Bipartisan Praise From Bill Clinton

By Steve Friess

Former President Bill Clinton at the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas on Monday. (Photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images)Former President Bill Clinton on Monday praised Senator Barack Obama’s energy policy at the opening of the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas.

But Mr. Clinton also lauded Mr. Obama’s rival, Senator John McCain, and said that either candidate would be progressive on the issue of climate change.

“Obviously, I favor Senator Obama’s energy positions, and Democrats have been by and large the more forward-leaning actors,” Mr. Clinton said. “But John McCain has the best record of any Republican running for president on the energy issue and on climate change.” He added, “I’m very encouraged about where the presidential rhetoric is in this campaign.”

Mr. Clinton’s remarks opened the two-day summit, held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and organized by Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, and John Podesta, Mr. Clinton’s former chief of staff.

Mr. Clinton challenged Nevada to tap its abundant wind and sunlight to become the first carbon-neutral state. He also questioned the recent rush to support offshore drilling.

3. Gee, I bet Bill would be lauding McCain's record if the successful
candidate had been other than Obama, NOT.

Bill did NOT have to be bipartisan, he could simply have talked about the Democrats position on climate change and I suspect he would have done so under "different" circumstances.

20. This is replay of Bill 2004 lauding Bush, barely mentioning Kerry on his book tour.
There is credibility to praising one candidate, without totally sliming the other, but McCain does not have the record or votes. Originally forced into the issue by Arizonans.

I don't see how McCain has exhibited really bucking his party when it counts. As president after all those campaign dollars and GOP organization, think tanks in place, definitely not.

31. Yep, sure seems like it to me as well....
During an election cycle, Bill, the consumate politician, knows exactly how his remarks will be interpreted, he chooses his words with full knowledge of what he is doing.

6. Unfortunately it now seems that President Clinton having thrown himself under the primary fight now
seeks to appoint himself as national moderator by placing himself above it by not wanting to appear 'partisan'.

Bill Clinton is becoming a national embarassment and has completely undermined any chance Senator Clinton had of becoming VP.

7. McCain doesn’t support a government stimulus package for alternative energy

Which is what the Democrats support
Clinton needs to get one of those 'drill here drill now' caps, but I'm sure
he's already got the underwear. What a jerk

when Feingold gets a couple dozen threads with people recommending to get it on the home page - perhaps then I'll say I made a mistake.

When Feingold says and does as many stupid things as the Clintons, I'll keep you posted.

30. When Feingold is a former US President he may warrant that kind of attention.
As it is, the OP proved to you that she did call Feingold out.

12. And it is equally as stupid. Feingold atleast has an excuse - he works with McCain
what is Clinton's excuse?

Even the newspapers are laughing at it as your own source indicates

As the Journal Sentinel's Craig Gilbert aptly put it in his story, "Those are not exactly Democratic talking points

working relationship with McCain - did you really think that helped your case.

By the way why did you respond to my post and fail to respond to Prosense's citation that she in fact had already posted on Feingold.

wouldn't a "sorry I was wrong" be appropriate?

21. I never said there wasn't a thread out there
However, as someone who reads in this forum regularly, there wasn't the overwhelming sense of criticism and bashing with Feingold like you get with Clinton.

So no, I was not wrong. I would have been wrong if there was 2 dozen threads started with dozens of recommendations.

24. your comment "For all you Clinton Haters guess what, Feingold did it too" indicated that
the OP was exercising a double standard when in fact she is very consistent. You call her a clinton-hater but not a feingold-hater.

The larger point that is quit hillarious is that you find quoting President Clinton, without comment and in context to be an act of hatred against Clinton.

Again try and pick up on a basic point: Prosense simply quoted the President without making any comment, your the one that finds this damning evidence of a hatred of Clinton - it is a bizzare point of view.

I'm sure there's already a talking point to explain away this piece of hypocrisy too.

Russ Feingold Makes John McCain's Day
Either Russ Feingold is the most naive politician in America, or he just doesn't care who wins in November.

He says that he's for Obama but is out there calling John McCain a "maverick by nature" and saying "the notion that somehow (McCain) is going to get in there and be some kind of ideological Newt Gingrich right-winger is a joke. There's no way that he would do that."

It gets better. Here's some more choice Feingoldisms on McCain:

"He's a very good legislator from my point of view, because when he gets onto something, he doesn't just want to introduce a bill, he likes to move it. And he's fearless."

"He's a great guy to fight an uphill battle with legislatively. He keeps his word. . . . I probably shouldn't be saying this stuff, but to be honest about it, it was one of the better professional experiences I've ever had in my life."

"He does seem much more tight and less fun than he was in the 2000 campaign. I worry for his sake - though I'm supporting his opponent - that his handlers are constraining him too much."

"It's unfair, because McCain's a blast. He's fun to be around. He's certainly young in spirit. He's actually very young in energy."

"Yes, he shows temper. But he burns fast, and he doesn't let it cloud his judgment. He would not be a loose cannon in the Oval Office. It's not like he's going to pick up the red phone in a rage."

"He is not a guy who wants to be chummy-chummy with political leaders of the party. He doesn't like that sort of constraint. He's an independent. So he somehow managed to become the nominee of the Republican Party. But we all know it's not because he was somebody that was kissing up to the Republican establishment, to say the least."

Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton had said these things?

Call me cynical, but this sounds like Ross Feingold is more interested in getting reelected in 2010 than helping Democrats retake The White House in 2008.
