McCain and His Mother Don't Recall Old Lawsuits, Against 1st Wife, Carol
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Republican presidential candidate John McCain's divorce was amicable enough that he and his ex-wife jointly brought a lawsuit 10 years later to recover damages for lost mementos, but it wasn't amicable enough to prevent McCain's mother from suing his ex-wife to get back some personal property.

Both lawsuits were settled out of court decades ago and before they went to trial, but records of them are kept in the archives of the city courthouse in Alexandria.

Curiously, although the records clearly list the plaintiffs, McCain's campaign says that the Arizona senator didn't know about or authorize the 1990 lawsuit with his ex-wife, Carol, and that his mother's 1980 lawsuit was filed "unintentionally." And McCain's 96-year-old mother, Roberta, says she never sued Carol.

But others involved dispute those assertions.

In the 1980 lawsuit, filed shortly after John and Carol McCain divorced, Roberta sued Carol to reclaim some personal property, including paintings, a needlepoint screen and a pair of earrings. A settlement was reached in 1981.

But in a brief telephone interview, Roberta denied filing the lawsuit.

"I have never heard of what you're talking about. ... I will put my hand on a Bible," she said, to attest that she had never sued Carol.

Roberta's denial prompted laughter from the ex-daughter-in-law.

"Yes, she sued me," Carol said in a brief phone interview.

1. Dayum!
The press wakes up. This story is building on itself.

Thanks JE. I think that was the spark, along with Colmes' momentary growth of testicles.

3. I'm sure he doesn't remember it because he was a POW.
Isn't that the answer to everything?

4. Give the old man a break, would ya?
He's a POW for crying out loud. You can't expect him to be honest, faithful or remember anything. You can't expect him to control his temper or pay attention. You can't expect him to understand the economy or who is who in our world of enemies.

Yet, he's fit for the most powerful job in the world at a time of crises?

They use his POWness as THE reason he is qualified and THE excuse for his failings. Pathetic.

7. It only counts if you're a republican
Any Democrat with former-P.O.W. status would be subject to accusations of cowardice, ineptitude & treason, with the accusers making up shit with impunity.

9. From the article:
But the lawyer who represented the McCains said she did indeed speak to McCain and get his permission to sue on his behalf.

"You can be sure that I talked to and got the permission of any client who is listed as a plaintiff," said attorney Barbara P. Beach.

It would be a serious violation to file an unauthorized lawsuit, and "I haven't been disbarred yet," Beach said with a laugh.

10. Makes me wonder how much help and support Momma McCain
gave to Carol while McCain was a POW. Doesn't sound like there was a very good relationship there.

12. I've always been VERY suspicious of Carol's "support" of McLame
and her "boys will be boys" excusing of his adultery and abandonment. I think John and Cindy BOUGHT her relative silence in exchange for supporting her and paying for her medical care for life.

I sure hope Warren picks up on this and asks McJack@ss if he really turned around and let his mother sue the woman he'd abandoned over a needlepoint.

21. You aren't alone; it's been whispered about since McCain came to prominence.
I've been in Arizona since then, and it's only whispers, but a lot of longtime Arizonans whisper a lot about it.

17. I know to file suit in Mississippi, one has to attest or swear that
the allegations or averments in the complaint are true and correct.

But in a brief telephone interview, Roberta denied filing the lawsuit.

"I have never heard of what you're talking about. ... I will put my hand on a Bible," she said, to attest that she had never sued Carol.

It appears that Roberta already attested that Carol had her stuff and she wanted it back.

Is it worse to be a liar or so old you can remember shit?

18. 10 yrs. after their divorce John and Carol 'jointly' owned the home
she lived in???

Pretty odd.... if you ask me. And I admit to being ignorant about how the 'well to do' live, but if Carol was being 'so well taken care of' would she be living in a house that shared a garage with a neighbor??- I'm obviously clueless - I thought she'd have her own garage- We park in our front yard (no driveway or garage) but we don't worry about anyone mistaking it for theirs.

I believe the lawyer who said J. was a willing participant in suing the Co. who threw out the stuff. He was a senator by then, and I can't imagine a lawyer representing someone who worked for the Reagans, and a sitting Senator would take that kind of personal risk-

Sure does show 'Roberta' to be the 'heiress' she is. And both mother and son to have some problems recalling history.

keeping control of the finances. In an ordinary divorce, property would have been divided and she would have received alimony. It surely wasn't some kind of wildly valuable joint investment that McCain just couldn't hand over, what with his marriage to a billionairess.

If the man who abandoned you still has the power to put you out on the street at any moment, that buys a lot of silence.

This stinks to high heaven.
