I need cheering up-It's hard not to be depressed about the chances for an Obama win right now
Edited on Fri Aug-15-08 10:14 PM by RMP2008
Rather than make a post about everything that I see going wrong right now, I decided to be more positive. Can those of you so inclined give me some reasons why Senator Obama will win the election and some things to feel good about? Right now, I'm really down in the dumps and anticipating a loss (used to it after 2 consecutive losses I guess). Thought all of you could cheer me up if you're so inclined.

3. If part of why you're depressed is the Russia thing, you need to think about
all the voters who are looking at McNut's response and would NEVER vote for him because he will for sure get us into ANOTHER WAR!

If you're worried about Hillary at the convention, I don't anticipate a problem! The few supporters she has left are very loud and vocal, but THEY are the ones who are in for a big disappointment when she looses AGAIN!

What in particular has you so depressed?

6. Primarily it's just the polls
Like Gallup, Rasmussen and Pew showing it a 3 point race or tied. I honestly thought we'd be ahead by 10-15 by this point like President Clinton was in 1996.

That said, of course, Governor Clinton didn't receive a strong bump in the polls until after his convention. Maybe Senator Obama will experience the same thing here.

11. I try to ignore the polls, but here's why.
1. Even to pollsters admit there's part of the population they can't access (those with cell phones only) and they haven't figured out how to deal with that. They toss in an estimate, but noone knows how close they are to being right.

2. I really don't WANT Obama to be running away with the race right now. The media really wants a horserace! If one or the other candidate had a significant lead right now, they the media would find some issues or talking points to bring him down so they could still have their horserace!

3. I think there really is something to the belief that the biggest majority of people don't pay a lot of attention to politics until late Sept. or early Oct. They have far too many other things demanding their attention, and November seems sooo far away to them right now.

You may think I'm just a nut, and maybe I am, but I'm still able to keep a positive outlook on this election because MOST of the people I hear talking are NOT talking about candidates, but about "the damn gas prices", the PrICE of milk and everything else they have to buy just to survive!". When their everyday life is threatened as it is now, they will not vote for someone who is "similar" to the guy they view put them in this mess.

20. And the population of under-35 voters with cell-phones-only is HUGE.
Not to mention all the newly registered voters who don't get polled b/c they are not considered "likely voters" by the polltakers.

The thing that DOES scare me about the polls is if the MSM can keep up the "too close to call" fantasy, it makes it easier for Diebold to steal the election for McWar.

22. why in the world would you think that?
Clinton was up because he was a sitting president, in a good economy, with no war to speak of.

The fact of the matter is we are even more polarized now than then.

Gone are the days of winning by 15 percent.

Neither Obama or Clinton would/will win this by more than 5 points.

15. Huh? Hillary has A LOT of supporters left, not just a few. I assume you didn't mean it that way. AND
the majority of us Hillary supporters are now supporting Obama for President, at Hillary's urging. We cannot afford 4 more years of Rethugs.

Please stop creating enemies out of democrats. It is very unhelpful.
Obama supporters are democrats. Not merely Obama supporters.

Hillary has millions of supporter who admire her. They are democrats. And they want to see a democrat win the WH.

9. Listen very, very carefully...we have a HUGE advantage
1) Almost every economic, political, historical analysis points to a win.

2) Obama is the dominant figure in this election.

3) Obama's campaign is doing an amazing job of registering new voters in every battleground state. This is key.

As for the polls, of course, they are all over the place. Your mistake is taking them as the sole or primary TRUTH of where the election stands.

If you expected Obama to be 10-15 points ahead by this point, you were being naive.

The undecideds will take their time making up their mind. Why? Because they can.

Obama will win. He has the team, the strategy and dynamics of history on his side.

12. When the voters find out more about McCain, we'll get momentum.
Right now he's getting the benefit of the maverick, hero trust, and the media isn't helping.

The debates won't do it, just as 2004 was shaped by the media after story. However strong Kerry peformed (remember the bulging transmittor). Schieffer delivered his to Bush, his family friend, so we'll have to be careful of kindly Schieffer again.

My only concern is the voting-the machines, the bad law, the purges, no audits. The only suggestion, weakness I see is the actual voting. That's why we need to get out the numbers and make sure the names are legit on V-Day.

I really, really liked a previous post of yours on negative advertising (so much that I actually reposted it the other day, with attribution...hope you don't mind). So I'm interested to know: what are you seeing that tells you he's going to win?

24. In a red county in Indiana this weekend we are having
a Latino "Soccer for Change" registration event where approximately 350-700 Latinos gather every Sunday....a congresswoman who speaks Spanish is coming from Illinois to speak to them for us, the local high school band director is lending his PA system for the event, and the owner of the soccer field, Jugo, is going to run the cookout that we helped pay for (the Obama campaign)!!!! We are going to get a LOT of new registrations from the young Latinos!!!!

Also doing more and more canvassing and blind door knocks on unregistered low-income apartments coming up! And this is only the beginning!

Lift your spirits and go out and DO something about it!

There are 55 million unregistered people out there nationwide. IF 50 of us in one Indiana county register at least 2 people each week until October 4th, that is 800 new registrations in one county alone!!!! Just think about it! Get out there and do your part and we can't fail! It's got to come from us, from the ground up! That's what the campaign is all about!! :)

25. Why?
I don't get this post. It's not like McCain has had a fantastic week or Obama has done anything. The race is stable right now. Obama is leading in the electoral college projections, is about to get a bounce from announcing his VP and the convention and is the first Dem to be competitive in Virginia and a slew of other states. Plus, we are going to outraise McCain like crazy. Cheer up man.

26. If you watch too much MSM, your sense of reality will get distorted.
It's probably better to just go out and meet some people-- be more active in your support of Obama. Or if you want to be low key about it, which is also cool because it avoids feeding into the derogatory stereotype the freepers have made up of us being cult followers, you can simply find your chance to discuss Obama in your daily life.

Not easy. And I agree with you. But it's only August.

28. It is only Aug. 15
for crying out loud.

It is not over by a long shot.

Quit letting the right wing media get to you. Not everyone is so stupid they will just do whatever Faux and CNN tell them to do, even if they could, there is still nearly 3 months left. Those polls ask "if the election were held today." Well, it's not being held today. Most people are not political junkies and don't pay any attention until near the end.

Obama will look more presidential than McNuts at all points where the voters see him. The debates will especially be bad for McDope.

30. Consider how the people that you know think. What their values are.
No doubt, they're considerably more laid back in their views than is represented by Bush and McCain.

For all that I disagree with some things that Obama has done, and stands for, I'm much more comfortable with his values -- and I think it's because he isn't a fake. And he's reasonable.

I also think, because he's the genuine article he can't be entirely predicted. He can't be underestimated, as David Bender just said, filling in for Rachel Maddow. For this reason I'm not at all depressed about Obama's chances in November.

I expect the upcoming convention will be totally thrilling.
I think the way Barack is working with Hillary is pitch perfect.
I'm feel totally ON this summer.
