Obama to hold public event after arrival to the islands

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ Barack Obama will speak at a Honolulu beach park shortly after he arrives with his family in the islands today for a long-awaited vacation.

It will be the Democratic presidential candidate's only planned public appearance during his trip.

The event at Keehi Lagoon Beach Park is free and open to the public.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, are stopping by the park after their plane lands at Honolulu International Airport. A campaign announcement doesn't say whether their two daughters or other family members would be at the rally.

Gates open to the public at 12:30 p.m. No signs or banners are permitted for security reasons.

Obama will also attend a sold-out $2,300-a-plate fund-raiser next Tuesday.

He plans to spend about a week in Hawaii before the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

4. I don't think it odd at all; I hope he goes there, too. I think Alaskans
would love to have the Dem nominee visit them. Goodness knows most of the rethugs in their state aren't worth spit.
