Could Lieberman be McCain's most potent VP pick?
Could Lieberman be McCain's most potent VP pick?
By David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — If a few votes had shifted eight years ago, Joseph Lieberman might now be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Instead, the Connecticut senator, who won re-election in 2006 as an independent, is one of Republican John McCain's more potent political weapons, maybe even potent enough to make another run at vice president, this time as a Republican.

"I'd love that," longtime friend and author Ben Wattenberg said.

Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, chuckles at the idea, but doesn't rule it out.

"I am not a candidate. I am not interested in doing that," he told ABC News last month, though he wouldn't remove himself unequivocally.

McCain's campaign won't comment on its selection process.

This much is clear: Lieberman, who long ago broke with Democrats on the Iraq war but has a solid party-line voting record on nearly everything else, is playing such a key role in McCain's White House bid that a VP bid is possible.

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg called Lieberman a "near perfect pick."
Steve Clemons, a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, a centrist public-policy group, said such a move would be "game changing."

1. No. Way. The religious zealots would walk out and nominate their own Jesus freak.
This is not going to happen, ever.

4. So who can you think of that will appease everyone on that side?
I don't think there is anyone.

5. Mike Huckabee.
That's who I think McCain will pick. It's his only choice.

6. I guess we'll soon find out. I have read that Huckabee is
involved in other interests and is going to have his own radio or TV show soon. Also, aren't there religious groups who don't like him? And how great is his economic background. Isn't that one of the many areas McCranky is weak in?
I know Romney's name is out there.

Oh, who cares?! :D

14. Not a chance
Way too fringe and the MSM will pick him apart. McCain does not want to be tagged with that fundamentalist angle.

3. Can't imagine the religious-right going for that
They think McCain's too liberal already (I know, hard to imagine), so they're not going to be enthused by some non-Republican, non-Christian, who doesn't believe that the most important thing in life is the crusade against abortion and gay marriage. Even if he's a right-wing nut on foreign affairs.

8. I don't think McCain will choose a running mate with a strong pro-choice
record. Lieberman has that. And Lieberman is another old male. Not gonna happen.

12. McCain trusts Lieberman.
Are there any clean republicans that supported Mccain during the primary?

McCain trusts the selection process and Lieberman.
M$m will love whomever he picks.

16. No. The simple fact is that
Lieberman is still officially a Democrat. And no matter how much of a suck-up he has been to McCain, the Republicans still don't trust him much more than do Democrats. That's simply not how the selection/nomination process works.

17. Despite what you read on DU, Lieberman is far too liberal to be the GOP VP nominee
McCain has enough problems with the far-right in his party. A significant number of them would abandon him if he picked a pro-choicer.

18. Not likely.......
Lieberman, although supporting McCain, is way to liberal to appease conservative Republican voters. Did I just say that????

He's one of the only people McCain likes that actually likes him back.

21. I think it's highly unlikely it will be Lieberman
also one thing to take into account is the fact that Lieberman is 66, which would put two old white men atop the ticket. Plus as others pointed out, Lieberman is a little too liberal in some places, despite his undying love for Bush and the war in Iraq.
