With people speculating that Bill Clinton might announce the VP candidate --
my question is this:

DOES a speaker (like Clinton) generally announce who the candidate is?

Does the nominee announce it?

I'm not asking if it's likely if Bill will or won't announce, just asking if generally, traditionally, is that how it's done?

Thanks for the on-going education, DUers! :hi:

12. That's pretty recent though
It wasn't long agoi that the secret was kept until it was announced at the convention.

Quayle was a convention announcement and Reagan was negotiating with Ford as the convention was underway.

I think the secret can't be kept anymore as the networks stake out the poossibles, so keeping it until the copnvention isn't practical anymore.

13. We're two and 1/2 weeks away.
"Well beforehand" is becoming less and less likely; if it isn't impossible already.

3. Major networks will show only 1 hr each night. That means Bill and the VP pick.

6. What do they do the rest of the time, if there's only an hour or so of
coverage each night? Are there lesser people giving speeches all day, or what? I confess I didn't watch much of previous conventions.

7. Yup, in fact
Obama's great speech at the 2004 Convention was only covered by one major new network ( i think MSNBC but i forgot)

He wasn't considered one of the most important speakers back then.

10. Probably some new young Dems running for Senate
back in 04 Obama was running for Senate so they gave him a slot at the convention

This year the Dems running for Senate will get some airtime.

8. Whaaa? That doesn't make any sense. Did they mean "introduce"?

11. I have no idea -- I may have used "announce" when I actually read
"introduce".

And to be clear, I didn't see/hear this from any news sources. Just DU speculation.

As I said, I wasn't questioning this particular event, but rather how/when do we traditionally learn who the VP is, and who tells us.
