Has anyone seen this? First I heard about it. Edwards departure.
It's hard for me to wrap my head around this one. I was an Edwards supporter, and would still like to see him in a powerful position, such as Attorney General.

As far as sources, if it weren't the Nation, I wouldn't pay any attention to it. I know, it's Alexander Cockburn, who is reporting on the National Enquirer story, but even then, The Nation has a lot of credibility with me. I've subscribed for about 20 years.

Edwards dropped out of the race, right before Super Tuesday, and since he sank a lot of money into those states, and campaigned there, it just didn't make sense. And he didn't explain it either.

Could this be why? It's in this weeks edition of The Nation. I would have posted yesterday, but it was "sub only" then. Not now.

(snip)

On October 10, 2007, the online edition of National Enquirer ran an exposé under the headline "Presidential Cheating Scandal! Alleged Affair Could Wreck John Edwards's Campaign Bid." The story began, "Sources have come forward to charge that the 'other woman' previously worked on Edwards' campaign.... A source close to the woman, whose name is being withheld by The National Enquirer, says that she confessed to having an affair in phone calls and emails, saying that her work with Edwards soon exploded into romance."

Edwards promptly issued a denial. Though she wasn't named in the Enquirer's story, so did Rielle Hunter, on a website. Not a breath of an alleged adultery by a presidential contender ruffled the pages of the nation's mainstream papers, despite the fact that the Enquirer has many proven scoops under its belt, including Rush Limbaugh's love affair with Oxycontin and Jesse Jackson's love child. Though down in numbers from its glory days, the Enquirer still has a circulation of 2,760,000.

On December 19, with the early Democratic primaries looming, the Enquirer struck again. It said Rielle Hunter was in an advanced stage of pregnancy with Edwards's child and--after the Enquirer's October story--had been whisked out of New York City and lodged in an upscale gated community in Chapel Hill. Edwards, flanked by Elizabeth, issued further passionate denials. The New York Times, nine weeks away from running a long, highly speculative story about John McCain's possible relationship with the much younger Vicki Iseman, kept its mouth shut, as did the rest of the mainstream press. Edwards was able to fight his way through the first primaries without having to battle charges from the national press that he was cheating on a sick wife and had a pregnant mistress stowed back in North Carolina.

On July 22 the Enquirer lowered the boom on Edwards. The weekly reported that it had nailed him visiting Hunter and child in the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. The Enquirer's reporters staked out Edwards and Hunter, ambushed the former as he stepped out of the elevator and pursued the white-faced Edwards till he took refuge in one of the hotel's lavatories, at which time he seems to have called hotel security on his cellphone and was escorted to safety. A hotel doorman confirmed the story later to Fox News.

Let me give you Democrats running or serving an office. Keep yourself clean! Don't give the reich the openings. Jeezus.

Why strive for fame or fortune? To get laid. That is why guys do things like politics that are not immediately renumerative (although very lucrative if you are successful). More status = more chance at having sex with lots of women (or men if you are into that sort of thing).

13. Mabye his wife's medical problems interferes with intimacy.

In such an event it is entirely possible his wife might have approved, even encouraged, this.

Something similar may have always been true with the Clintons. Maybe Hillary knows the difference between fucking and loving and doesn't give a rat's ass if Bill is fucking as long as he continues loving her. There are a lot of people like that in the world.

Unfortunately, most of you are too judgemental of couples who do not get their head screwed up over a little screwing. So politicos like this would have to pretend they care just to keep you folks from being outraged.

Listen, this may be some type of male fantasy, but, trust me, 97 percent of married women would not give their husbands permission to cheat. It just doesn't happen.

And, especially given Elisabeth's disease, she would feel MORE in need of intimacy - though not always sexual - from her husband. When the chips are down, you want to be able to depend on your closest loved ones.

I don't.

Edited to correct the spelling of "Elizabeth." I spell my daughter's middle name as "Elisabeth," so I always write it that way.

Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 09:30 PM by Crisco
I take it then your answer is no.

There are an amazing number of women who know their husbands cheat and their attitude is that as long as it's nothing serious that would threaten their family, home, social standing (hence, discretion) and emotional security, they're willing to turn a blind eye. Is EE one of them? I don't know.

71. I still stand by my 97 percent who would not.
Those of whom you speak are few and far between - 3 percent of women, and that number would go dramatically down given a life-threatening illness in which they'd need a faithful partner for emotional stability.

Besides that, I simply don't think Elizabeth fits the mold of an appeaser to that lifestyle. At. All.

82. In admitting that 3% do, you admit the possibility (which is all I suggested).
Edited on Fri Aug-08-08 09:22 AM by ieoeja
By the way, do you figure that is 3% of healthy women, or 3% of women who can not engage in sexual activities themselves for medical reasons -- the theory I proposed in this instance? I would imagine the percentage would be somewhat higher among the latter case.

And why did you have to get sexist about this? While I have never personally known a couple where the wife let her husband get a little on the side because of her inability to have sex, I *have* known a couple of husbands who let their wives wander for that very reason.

You know why they did that? Because they loved their wives very much. And they did not want to see them deprived.

Finally to address a point in your first reply, what in the world makes you think a spouse can't fuck someone and still go home to their spouse and provide intimacy they require? What else can they not do while still taking care of a spouse's needs? Can they go out with friends for a few drinks on occasion? Play a round of golf? Shop? Run for President?

35. Thanks...I was dismayed that "The Nation" would take this piece from Cockburn..
Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 05:42 PM by KoKo01
Reading it...I still wonder why they took it...except that "The Nation" was one of the first out of the gate for Obama..and maybe they saw Edwards as not the "Populist" he claimed to be. Or, maybe the Nation is another long list of betrayers of Progressive Dems and change for our party.

I'm so sick of having to deal with betrayers on our Left who come in "shiny packages." Carter, Clintons, Gore and Edwards and maybe Obama.

What are our Democratic Leadership doing? They REFUSE to hold the BIGGEST CRIMINALS IN US HISTORY ACCOUNTABLE.

Now "The Nation" is giving creds to some "Photoshopped photos of Edwards with a fake baby? in a "sweaty T-Shirt?"

Whether the story is true or not about the "Love Baby" even our "so-called" Progressive Media is behaving like SWIFT BOATERS.

I guess they are all in it together. It makes me tired.

BTW...the damned thing in "NE" is photoshopped because Edwards (a good old Southern Boy whose Mama raised him right) would NEVER appear in a photo holding a baby that was his in a sweaty T-Shirt." Either the Enquirer is back to it's old "Four Headed UFO Lands in Elvis Pod" TRICKS or they had the "goods on the print story and couldn't get the photos but felt they had enough to back their "print piece up" and the "doctored/photoshopped photos" were just the "Stage 2" even though they knew they wouldn't hold up.

What I want to know is "WHY NOW?" Who is it on the Democratic Side that wants Edwards shoved out? What does it mean to them to "Swift Boat Edwards" forcing a DNA Test and Distracting Attention from Obama Campaign? Is it Hillary or the Right? Is it our OWN DEMS who've been complicit with the DLC who might also be accomplises?

Who knows these days....and that's the PROBLEM IN OUR COUNTRY ...that WE DON'T KNOW..which sides the attacks come from, anymore. :-(

11. I always thought that he dropped out for Obama
I thought that the writing was on the wall about his chances. He wasn't winning anything and if he stayed in the race Hillary would win by default since she generally had enough of a majority percentage. I thought that he dropped out knowing he wouldn't win but that it would be to Obama's advantage if he did. No one benefited more than Obama and after that he took off.

I say this as someone who was then an Edwards Supporter and very disappointed.

As far as this is concerned I can't read this article without a subscription and I have yet to be convinced that he is the father. It would make me a total idiot if it were true because I did believe that he was an honest man and that he and Elizabeth have a beautiful love story. What kind of man cheats on a wife living with cancer? Not the type of man that I think he is with of course my limited perspective. It just doesn't feel true.

15. I think what's most disappointing is that it shatters my view of
his and Elizabeth's love story.

I guess I have a double standard. I don't think Bill Clinton should have been impeached for adultery. But he was already in office. However, when I am choosing to support someone running for office, it would certainly affect how I feel about them. Especially if (like in this case) the person was reckless enough to get involved and get someone pregnant during the campaign. I can overlook things in the past.... everyone makes mistakes, and I wouldn't kick someone out of office for sex. But when it is in a current campaign, I guess I expect more from them.... this was a major failure in judgement on his part.

28. As one never for Edwards, what is surprising if it is true,
is that he did not drop out in say July, when he learned she was pregnant. The risk that it would be found out was way too high - and if the story came out in September or October it would doom our chances. That he didn't drop out in October when it was first reported shows a real willingness to gamble - if true.

12. WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!!!!
what a coincidence.....the candidate on the repuke side who ended up getting the nomination left his injured wife for some blonde bimbo from a rich family. he met her while he was still married and ended up leaving his wife for her. apparently he had a lot of extramarital affairs during his marriage to the first wife, and possibly even to the second.

and then there was that other wacky GOP candidate from NY who had his mistress over at the mayor's mansion while his wife was still living there.

it's craaaaaaazy!

the main difference between edwards and the repukes is that edwards is still with his wife...which makes me think the national enquirer story is bullshit anyway.

I wasn't making a comment about her ability to fight. I'm sure she will, but metastasized cancer is, well, extremely fatal. I'm sorry she's in that situation - I was just being truthful, however.

36. Agree with you...but by being FORCED by "behind scenes media" to get the test then HE
becomes the ISSUE of the Day on the Cables...and not our Democratic Presidency race. If Edwards is the father he should have delt with this before now...and if he is NOT then the timing of Huff Post and others like Mickey Kaus mean that Repugs are fighting for their LIFE and so they will grasp at any straw.

Edwards could be trying to save the Party from "Swift Boat Type Scandals" by not addressing this stuff from "NE." If he is the father of the child ...he should have spoken way before this to save our Dem Party from a "true Swift Boat."

I don't know...but the timing is odd...the photo's are not current of Edwards and it's mostly "heresay" that could have been paid by some Repug Op to the Enquirer (given that all newspapers are in trouble these days and Enquirer makes it's living off Front Page EXPOSES that usually are BOGUS...even if they get a few things correctly.

I'm holding my breath that this is just a way for RW BIG DONORS to "pump" "ENQUIRER" to hype this story with the bogus photos being the clue that this is just another "UFO/ELVIS and EDWARDS seen Ascending into the Spacecraft" thingy.

And...did you hear that Joe Biden's sons were involved in a Lawsuit about a Hedgefund?

Amazing the "attacks against DEM VP Candidates these days. Same day that "Enquirer" stuff comes out...Biden and his Brother and Sons are involved in Hedge Fund "Paradigm, LLC" Scheme...that's all over the Financial sites.

What's that old saw: "Hit two birds with one stone." Sounds kind of true, today with the "breaking news." :puke:

21. I don't really care. Didn't care about Clinton's, Bush's, the other Bush's, Gingrich's....
I cared about Gingrich's hypocrisy, but I just don't care about the personal life of candidates I support. Not that I ever supported Edwards. In fact, this goes along with what I thought of him all along. He has a decent streak, but he's dishonest and opportunistic.

But I really don't care about his personal life. That's between his wife and he. We don't know, first of all, whether the story is true, and second of all, what Elizabeth thinks of it. Maybe she approved. Maybe this is their arrangement. Maybe there are factors we have no way of knowing. Maybe Edwards is a lying cad who can't be trusted by his own spouse. Any way it goes, I just don't care. I mean, I care in the human sense about the pain and suffering this might cause everyone involved, and I cared because even though I never trusted John, I always admired Elizabeth. But for political purposes, all I care about is whether the person will do a good job, whether I can trust them to advance the issues I believe are important, and whether they are qualified.

I don't care that Clinton had an affair, or either Bush, or Reagan if he did. I liked or disliked them based only on how they did the job they were paid to do. Clinton did it brilliantly, the Bushes sucked. And if Reagan happened to be virtuous in marital terms while in office, he was still the most vile president we've ever had.

If our presidents suddenly became chaste, we would be the only nation in the history of the planet who could boast such a thing. If one would even call it boasting.

One thing that does intrigue me on a personal level here, though: if Edwards really was at that hotel, knowing the Enquirer and others were out to catch him, then what does that say? Aside from him being an idiot for not choosing a private location. To me, it says he must care about the child. He would have been safer avoiding all contact with the woman and the child, mailing a hefty silence check (or cash) to her periodically, and avoiding any chance of getting caught. He risked everything to see the child. Maybe that means something. Or maybe he was just being blackmailed to see the baby, I don't know.

22. If true, I am not surprised.
I have been the victim of infidelity, and can speak from firsthand knowledge that seemingly wonderful, sincere and loving people can do ghastly, abusive and depraved things when they think no one is looking.

23. 90% of Americans have had (or will have) extra marital sex. Same % as it was in the 1950s
Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 02:02 PM by Hamlette
we pretend to be prudes but we are all randy as hell. (by extra marital I mean outside of marriage, includes pre marital sex.)

Who cares. It is NOT our business nor is it the business of the tabloid who followed them.

(and, just because he visited her, does that mean he's the dad? I've actually visited young mothers in my life.)

29. absolute bullshit. And he doesn't even get his Fox News details right
Cockburn doesn't like democrats all that much. But for him to repeat these unsubstantiated claims is ridiculous.

And even if Edwards was there, it doesn't prove the child is his. Another man who worked on his campaign had claimed fatherhood- so maybe Edwards was just visiting with his friends?

33. Cockburn frames this garbage as media criticism
this is how he begins:

Not for the first time in recent political history, an American standing in the checkout line at a supermarket is better informed on a hot issue of the day than the nation's elite who send their maids to buy food and get their news from the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Since when is knowing about a rumored affair "informed?"

I wonder what was on the front pages of the NYT and the WP at the same time as this tabloid trash, and whether people would be better informed by glancing at those publications instead.

Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 08:18 PM by Stephanie
Yeah, the Clinton years would have been so *dull* without the Scaife-funded Witch Hunt. Much *duller* than endless war, 9/11, gutting of the Constitution, destruction of the U.S. economy, death and maiming of thousands of our brave soldiers, etc., etc. Just spare Cockburn a *dull* administration.

Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 06:16 PM by beachmom
editorial control on all articles? Because Cockburn on CounterPunch is vile, and has printed outright lies. However, I am wondering if The Nation fact checks everything before allowing it to go under their name.

I have watched John Edwards give speeches in person in NC in the summertime and I never saw him sweat. Why is he so sweaty in those pictures? Why is he wearing icky clothes? He's rich. I honestly wouldn't have an opinion one way or the other on the story, but the pics are highly questionable for me.

83. Here is a link to the latest on the story
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5441195&page=1

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extra-marital affair with a novice film-maker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

Democratic presidential candidate former U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-NC) speaks to supporters during a campaign event at the Keene State University in Keene, New Hampshire January 6, 2008.
(Carlos Barria / Reuters)
More PhotosIn an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 42-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

I'm not putting it in the "Latest breaking news" it breaks my heart.
