FOX News Still Trying To Portray Obama As A Muslim

Even though guest Stephen Mansfield, author of the book The Faith of Barack Obama, specifically told the Hannity & Colmes audience Tuesday night (8/5/08) that Barack Obama is “a serious Christian” who will govern out of his religious base, FOX News producers ran a series of banners on the lower third of the screen suggesting that Obama is a Muslim and a less than complete Christian. With video.

Mansfield told Alan Colmes that Obama had practiced Islam “lightly, very lightly” with his father (I think he meant step-father) for a brief time but that he was never an official Muslim. Mansfield also made it clear that Obama is a devout Christian.

I think this is strange because despite the silliness of Faux News in general, technically Obama is a Muslim to the actual Muslims due to Islamic law, which states that the child's religion is decided by the father's religion. But this is only the perception of Obama in the Middle East, which actually helps the US if he's elected since it makes it that much harder for the Middle East to characterize the US as the devil when y'know, we show how enlightened we are by electing someone based on his MERITS regardless of the color of his skin or his religion. If we judge Obama based on American standards, which allow us to freely choose which religion to practice, Obama is Christian. But even armed with that knowledge of Islamic law, what Faux News shills say is usually just BS. I think I really would have more respect for them if they didn't just pull crap out of their ass and try to create conspiracy theories. It's really hard for them to create a better conspiracy theory than the one that reality has thrust upon us all: that a government willfully went to war based on deception of its allies, its citizens and its own employees.

By comparison, all they're doing is making themselves appear even loonier (if that's possible).

5. I think that it's a bit more complicated

Because although Islam has the Koran, which must be studied in its original Arabic to avoid translation errors, there's still a degree of variety in Islamic practice. Hence, why you get places like Indonesia with a more secularized Muslim population and Iran with a much more radical form of Islam practiced. From what little I know, despite Obama never practicing Islam himself, his father did. In Islamic culture, lineage can be important (this is also likely attributed to aspects of Arabic culture) so when the father is a Muslim, it can mean that without any action on his own, the son is considered a Muslim. Like I said, this is a difference in view of religions as in the West, you generally have to CHOOSE to practice the religion. That might not be the case in the Middle East. Then again, this is a very gray area as Obama's father later stopped being a practicing Muslim and so would be considered an apostate.

that this is issue is complicated in general but I'd say that anecdotal evidence suggests that most of the world's muslims just want a change from the Bush-Republicans and don't care that Obama is a Christian.

It's the same reason that the Clintons are popular in most of the world - good policies and good diplomacy are more important to world opinion than personal matters such as religion etc.
