Blair refuses to pick up Bush war honor

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is refusing to fly to the United States to receive a medal bestowed on him by the nation for his support over last year's Iraq war.

US President George W. Bush has put huge pressure on his closest ally to pick up the Congressional Medal of Honor in person, the Sunday Mirror quoted a senior British government source as saying.

Blair is immensely popular with large sections of the American public for his staunch support of the Iraq war and the White House believes a visit by the prime minister now would provide a much-needed boost to Bush's re-election campaign.

"There has been a lot of telephone traffic between the White House and Downing Street over the medal in recent week," the Sunday Mirror quoted a senior government source as saying.

6. how the hell does he get entitled to one
Maybe the presidential medal of freedom, which I believe is the highest civilian award but the CMOH I believe is for military personale only.

just a congressional medal

Blair has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The Sunday Mirror had reported in error that the prime minister had been given the Congressional Medal of Honor -- an award handed to US servicemen for valour in combat.

7. That's what I'll have to assume because if the village idiot tried
to give him the CMH, he'd lose the military AND the veterans vote in a heartbeat!

8. From the Conressional Med. of Honor Society
What are the guidelines for which the medal could be awarded?

On July 25,1963 Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded:
a.) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
b.) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or,
c.) while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

I betcha * let Blair slip by under the third criteria. I supposed he is technically serving with friendly forces. I'm just glad Tony has finally shown some backbone and won't come get it.

10. Blair cannot accept such a medal from Bush.
Blair is seen by many Britons as being too close to Bush, and it has hurt him politically at home. If he were to come here to pick up a medal, it would only feed the flames of opposition to him at home. The fact that Bush does not realize this shows how stupid he really is.
