Obama takes six-point lead over McCain in new national poll (AP-Ipsos)
WASHINGTON -- A new poll finds Barack Obama is leading John McCain nationally by 6 percentage points thanks to big leads he is enjoying among women, minorities and younger voters.

The Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows that Obama is leading his Republican rival 47 percent to 41 percent. McCain has a 10-point lead among whites and is tied with the Democrat among men, but Obama is leading by 13 points among women and has huge leads with minorities and the young.

The poll was released Tuesday following a week in which the two camps accused each other of bringing race into a campaign in which Obama is seeking to become the country's first African-American president.

7. Obama's only losing white voters by 10 points?
If that's the case he's in pretty good shape...Kerry lost white voters by 17 points.

27. I highly doubt that number. Zogby and Rasmussen are showing much bigger deficits there.

14. Good. McCain has been flailing away trying to cut into his lead
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 02:51 PM by HughMoran
..and he's had some success at keeping within striking distance - which is troublesome, but not surprising considering his ad blitz across the nation. I'm hoping that when Barack puts it in high gear closer to November that he can open a sizable lead then - thus discouraging McCains somewhat lackluster support and creating a landslide.

15. With "a big lead among women"... tell me again why Hillary has to be the VP?

He's already won over...or is winning over... 90% of her voters.

17. Here's what Hillary brings (on the plus side)
She energizes all of his strengths. It's like a booster shot of adrenaline. She excites women, black voters, Latino voters and Democrats. And she probably brings in some of those Appalachia voters too.

I'm not saying she doesn't have negatives.

But in a year where Dems out poll Repubs by 10, energizing Dems is not a bad thing.

26. Six points in an early national poll is nothing. He should be up by 16
which is the generic Democratic number right now. And I highly doubt Obama is tied right now among men.
