1. Exactly. GROUND GAME!
Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 11:03 PM by Drunken Irishman
It's the reason Bush won in 2000 and 2004 and will be the reason we win in 2008!

2. That's it.
We only need a majority. 40% of Americans that could vote don't. The OTeam know how to micro target demographics......that's what they do best in fact.

3. The Ground Game Matters Only for AA vote
The ground game is way over-rated in Presidential campaigns.

This year it matters because we can get near 100 percent eligible African Americans to vote IF we inform them, get them registered and have a solid GOTV ops on Nov 4th.

But we sure as hell don't need to leaflet and phonebank for Obama. That's wasted time, energy and resources. Use those for down ticket races and ballot initiatives where necessary.

13. You Believe All You Want
The AA vote isn't minor, in fact, GA is in play if we do well there on the ground. But most places our energy ought to be focused on down ballot stuff and sticking to signage.

19. The point of astonishment to your post was not that the AA is not significant
but that you seemed to be saying that the ground game is important only for the AA vote and not siginificant in other demographics.

If you have had the chance to follow Phrigndumass' daily thead which I help from time to time on you will have seen that I think that GA, TX and NC are all much closer to flipping because they are seriously under evaluating the AA vote (and also the hispanic vote) in those three states.

Tomorrow phrigndumass will be launching a new effort to get people to join in establishing our own data cross tabs so that we can recalculate the state polls with more realistic turn out percentages, the idea is to find out what AA and other percentages need to be achieved in order to flip GA, NC and TX. I believe that we are much closer than the professional pollsters calculate because they are underestimating AA turnout.

10. TV election
I suppose I could include the youth vote as well, but those are self-organized operations anyway as Obama is so popular with the kids.

Like today, I got a dumb ass, expensive, letter from Obama. Total waste of my money. Total conventional wisdom. People don't need a mailing to decide anything this election.

Turn out will be at historic levels regardless.

7. The ground game pushed Bush over Gore and Kerry.
Don't ever underestimate the ability of a solid ground game in a presidential election. If you can't get your supporters out, you lose. It's that simple!

12. The GOP's Ground Game With Evangelicals + Big Media Gave Them The Edge
The Big Media picture is now worse then ever before because of media consolidation. However, to suggest that the ground game only works for the African American community ignore reality. The GOP has heavily relied on a ground game driven by evangelical christians. It is great that Obama's campaign is making this a Democratic strength.

21. Indeed. Repubs actually had more GOTV volunteers than we did in 2004
1.6 million vs out 1.5 million. They also had (and still do have) a much better database for tracking their supporters. Dean and Obama have done a great deal to get us caught up in that area, though.

22. Unions? I Read That Walmart Is Warning About A Possible Obama Victory
Might lead to more efforts to unionize Walmart. Again, while the GOP has a considerable advantage with conservative evangelicals and Big Media, Obama and the Democrats probably have their best chance to overcome these advantages with the use of alternative media and grass roots organizing.

24. Not sure whether our totals included separate union efforts or not.
Still, the Repubs still lead us in national voter ID efforts.

Waking the Giant: Making the Latino Vote Count in 2008

Latinos have long been noted as the "sleeping giant" of elections in the United States because they turn out to vote in numbers far below their percentage of the voting-eligible population. For example, in 2006, Latinos made up nine percent of the voting eligible population in the United States, but only six percent of the voters

One reason for the lag in voter participation among Latinos is their very low voter registration rate. Only 54 percent of voting-eligible Latinos are registered to vote, compared to 61 percent of Blacks and 71 percent of Whites. Further, Latinos did not turnout at rates similar to Blacks or Whites. In 2006, 60 percent of registered Latinos voted, compared with 67 percent of Blacks and 73 percent of Whites. Overall this means that just 32 percent of the Latino voting-eligible population cast a ballot in 2006 compared with 41 percent of Blacks and 52 percent of Whites. If Latino voter turnout had matched their percentage of the voting-eligible population in 2006, an additional 2.6 million Latino voters would have gone to the polls.

As November rapidly approaches, Democrat Barack Obama seems to be the preferred candidate among young voters.

According to the Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll, 55% of voters between the ages of 18-34 favor Sen. Obama, while 31% favor Sen. McCain. As a young voter, ( I am a 20 year old Senior at Ohio Wesleyan University) I believe Sen. Obama just communicates better with my generation - with much more emotion and enthusiasm than Sen. McCain. This enthusiasm gap is shown in the polls as well; 14% of McCain voters, say that they are excited about their candidate. 44% of Obama voters say their excited about him. Why?

Obama Leads McCain in Battleground States Among Single Women
By Jennifer Parker

Unmarried women -- often dubbed the "Sex and the City" vote -- are overwhelmingly supporting Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., over Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in key battleground states, according to a recent poll.

Single, divorced, separated, and widowed women voters in 14 battleground states favor the presumptive Democratic nominee over his Republican rival by 61 to 29 percent, according to a Democratic poll commissioned for Women's Voices Women Vote, an advocacy group for unmarried women voters.

Those findings jibe with the latest ABC News poll released in July, which found Obama leading McCain nationally among unmarried women voters 59 to 32 percent.

"Unmarried women are to progressives what evangelicals are to the conservative movement," Page Gardner, founder and president of Women's Voices Women Votes, told ABC News.com.
