Poll: McCain's attack strategy paying dividends (AP)
WASHINGTON - Intensified attacks by Republican John McCain on the character of his Democratic opponent have coincided with Barack Obama losing a nine percentage point advantage in a national poll, which showed the candidates running dead even over the weekend.

McCain, who had vowed to avoid the kind of negative tactics that were used against him in the 2000 Republican primary contest with George W. Bush, began attacking Obama during the Illinois senator's trip to Iraq and Afghanistan late last month.

In the course of the McCain offensive, Obama's lead in a Gallup Poll tracking survey slid from nine percentage points on July 26, when he returned from overseas, to nothing by Saturday, when the poll showed the candidates tied at 44 percent.

The four-term Arizona senator, who backed the war and claims experience with security and foreign policy issues, charged that Obama's promise to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq within 16 months of taking office amounted to his having chosen to lose a war to promote his run for the presidency.

McCain has not relented even though he took criticism for the remark. It appeared at the time to be a defensive response to the massive attention paid to the Obama visit to the two U.S. war fronts as well as to the Middle East and Europe.

He subsequently ran a television ad that accused Obama of deciding not to visit wounded U.S. troops because he could not take television cameras — a claim that appeared to be false. Next he issued a commercial that interpose images of Obama with pop culture figures Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, trying to paint Obama as a celebrity without the experience to lead the country.

That was followed by accusations that Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, had resorted to racial politics by asserting McCain and other Republicans would try to frighten Americans because Obama did not look like past U.S. presidents whose images are on the country's paper money.

And most recently, in an Internet advertisement, the voiceover calls Obama "The One" and features Obama appearing to describe himself and his presidential quest in grandiose terms. It ends with Charlton Heston as Moses parting the Red Sea in the movie, "The Ten Commandments."

Obama may have given McCain more fodder in recent days by announcing a readiness to compromise with Republicans on offshore oil drilling — which he had opposed — and apparently rejecting McCain's challenge to join him in a series of town hall meetings.

On Saturday, Obama said McCain's campaign was cynical and trying to distract voters from real issues but that he did not believe his opponent and his campaign had engaged in racism.

"In no way do I think John McCain's campaign was racist. I think they are cynical," Obama said. "Their team is good at creating distractions and engaging in negative attacks."

1. It was....
..mission accomplished for McCain. Now, it's up to the Obama campaign to accomplish it's mission which it has failed to accomplish and that is to hammer home McCain=Bush. Balls in Obama's court and he better come out dribbling Monday morning (like a few hours from now)! It's as simple as that.

5. OBAMA *HAS* been hammering away at this point. In EVERY speech, in EVERY appearance...
Just because you haven't seen it on the M$M doesn't mean that it didn't happen!!!!

Call on the Democrats to help make the case. Obama cannot be expected to do this alone!!

WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE DEMOCRATS?!?!?!?!?

12. He has been buying ads. He's been spending a lot of money on ads. In fact, I've seen them
here in the D.C./MD/VA many times! So he is spending money on ads. But he can't do this alone. He needs the aid of the DNC!!

7. Ron Fournier's AP is part of the McCain base!
so of course they herald a poll! Why not?

Plus they repeat McCain's little smear about Obama choosing to lose a war to win an election bit.

How quaint!

I guess this is posted here for a reason, although I'm not sure what that reason is....other than providing AP more dissimination than it already has.

3. As a DUer said
(I think it was wienerdoggie) -- he's giving them something/someone to vote AGAINST. Even though the ads are bullshit, it may be working.

So we, in addition to showing why people should vote FOR Obama, would do well to stack the deck with reasons to vote AGAINST McCain.

6. DNC should have been running ads containing McSame's TOP TEN flip-flops
They have yet to produce an ad that addresses this. And Obama has been hammering away and making the case over and over again that McCain=Bush=McSame!! The M$M is focused on dumb, inconsequential shit and ignores substantive issues. It's done my design. I don't know how Obama wins if even his supporters can't see what's going on.

We need to be working. Calling the DNC, calling the Democratic leadership, demanding that they work harder for the nominee!

Stop whining and get to work!

Do you want a President who thinks war is a joke?

He's given us plenty of stuff to use. We need to use it!

10. AMEN!! Call the DNC. Call the Dem leadership. Demand that they condemn McSame's dirty
campaign tactics, especially since he vowed to run a respectable campaign. He is doing anything but. And our candidate is losing because of it!

11. I don't think I can bear it if McCain wins
My only comfort is that while Gore won the popular vote, Bush (with the help of the Supreme Court) stole the electoral vote.

I hope that the Blue States are not falling for that horrible stuff the Repubs are selling because the voters who matter are the ones in the Gore states plus one other reasonably sized state.

I also hope that the Dems can pin the economy's failures on McCain because I know he'll have the same policies as Bush.

18. Paying Off Where???
In the eyes of the AP DC bureau headed by a Gramps operative?

Cause the "beauty pageant" numbers from one pollster says so?

Was the Constitution changed while I was out this afternoon? From where I come from you win by the Electoral College and from most polls I see Senator Obama is holding all the blue states of 2004 and is ahead or close in many others. I live in Illinois and haven't seen a poll...but I would imagine my junior Senator is polling 60% plus...ya think Gramps is doing that in his home state?

And for those who want Obama to jump in the slime with Gramps...that's a sure way to play into the GOOP's hands...it WOULD bring down Obamas numbers from the many who currently support him because he isn't playing the desparation games.

If this is the only way Gramps can get "traction"...it's gonna take a new slime every day...and who knows, maybe Roves goons can pull that off for the next three months, but each of these baseless attacks just diminish any respect many have for Gramps.

19. Well it's a good thing that the election isn't a national poll
Obama has a clear lead in EVs, according to polling data. Fuck the AP.
