John McCain is like an old spittoon.
He's been around so long that people don't notice the crap he's full of. :-)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

A Chicago courtroom scene, mid 1910s. A spittoon is seen on the floor at bottom right.A spittoon (or spitoon) is a receptacle made for spitting into, especially by users of chewing tobacco. It is also known as a cuspidor (which is the Portuguese word for "spitter" or "spittoon", from the verb "cuspir" meaning "to spit"), although that term is also used for a type of spitting sink used in dentistry. Cuspidors are still manufactured today, and commonly seen in gymnasia adjacent to drinking fountains.

"Spittoon" can also be slang American English for any receptacle (such as a tin can) used to hold spit, although the term "spitter" is more common.

Now how many DU'ers didn't know what a spittoon was?

1. Actually, I do. My uncle had one in his office. He was a "country lawyer"
in Brownwood, Texas and in the 1950s I used to visit him and my aunt every summer. I loved the experience andespecially going to "Uncle Tim's" office. A big old clanky elevator took me up to his office on the 2nd floor and he had a large table in the waiting room and spittoons in view.

They smelled horribly and nobody would have them near themselves today but in those days it was probably just the "manly" thing. Ugh.

Uncle Tim smoked a corncob pipe, bless him. It was a abit messy but it smelled okay.
