Why anything McCain throws at Obama won't be nearly as effective as the Swiftboat ads.

The only reason the SWVT ads worked in undermining Kerry's support was because it attacked the heart of what John Kerry's 2004 campaign was all about.

He positioned himself as a war hero, one who was well versed in combat and knew how to handle a war. He chose to do this because the dominant issue of 2004 was still national security.

Obama is not campaigning as a war hero and doesn't attempt to portray himself as anything of the sort. Nor is it 2004 any longer. People in this country are hurting and now the major issue is economic security as well as moving forward beyond the Bush presidency.

Let McCain go off about how popular Obama is and what a splash he is making. Obama's argument isn't to vote for him because he's popular and people like him. It's all about CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE. No more Bush-era America and moving forward toward progress.

Obama will stay on message and not go negative with personal attacks- as he should. Doing anything else leaves him vulnerable to charges of him going against his campaign.

The most effective thing he can do is keep tying McCain to Bush and keep the conversation on those issues alone.

1. Actually many people in the US have been voting against their better
interests and nature since Nixon, especially with Reagan and W. If they would just stop to think, they would remember Reagan's policies of deregulation and the resulting debacle of the savings and loan, not to mention the enormous deficit of Reagan and the first Bush. Then in 8 years Clinton turned that around, even while fighting a monstrous and continuous battle against the right wing at every juncture. And now for 8 miserable years W has done something stupid and evil with each passing day. When one thinks that nothing else could possibly happen that is worse, the very next day it does. If he were a dem, he would have been tarred and feathered 7i/2 years ago.
