I despise Harold Ford. He is as close as anything I've ever thought of calling an "Uncle Tom"
The NYT said of the McCain ad showing Britney, Paris Hilton, then Barack ---

"The ad gave us an uneasy feeling that the McCain campaign was starting up the same sort of racially tinged attack on Mr. Obama that Republican operatives, some of whom work for Mr. McCain now, ran against Harold Ford, a black candidate for Senate in Tennessee in 2006. That assault, too, began with videos juxtaposing Mr. Ford with young, white women."

And yet, when Rachel Maddow said the commercial was clearly racially motivated, and Gregory went to Harold Ford and asked him if he felt that way - Ford said, adamantly - "NO, I thought I made that clear".

Disgusting. If I were him, and what was done to me in TN happened and then I saw these same people behind THAT commercial showing young beautiful white women with Ford, now making the same type of commercial with Obama, and using the world's most famous young white females, I would stand up for Obama. Instead, Ford has said things like Bush & Cheney shouldn't be held accountable because the Constitution doesn't "poll well", and he repeatedly seems to side with Conservative viewpoints, to the point of seeming like he's being sub-servant to "white power" (imo aka the GOP).

Ford, get the hell off the TV if you're not going to defend Obama. You were on the TV a few months ago and you did your wishy-washy comments about him them. It's as if you're jealous of Obama. Nothing else makes sense. And, Sen. Obama, I'd stay clear of Ford, he gives me the heebie-jeebies. I don't trust him.

Here's a comment from "The Black Snob" blogger page that I found looking for this picture, after I had already typed my remarks -
"Toni said...

Gut feeling: Ford is bitter. I've seen him on numerous occasions on Fox and MSNBC and I always have feeling that it is something more than just trying to be neutral. To me, there is an underlying vibe that he secretly wanted Barack to fail, since Ford "was there first".

I do think he is now ready to tie himself to the winner, as evidenced in his appearance last week (or the week before) on Meet the Press. His tune was very different."

Here's a pic of Ford leaning in on Obama imo, like he's about to try and suck the life out of him. I feel like he's a Judas. One of these men looks good-hearted and caring, the other looks very cold in the pic and shifty - appearances are strong. (Cheney, McCain come to mind).
I don't care if you disagree, you're right to do so. It's just I've seen Ford on multiple occasions say NOTHING in support of Obama, and sound rather uncaring about his candidacy. Ford's 'supposedly' a Democrat, but I find that comical.

2. Notice the picture...... he really isn't looking into Obama's eyes
That's how I see him in every day life.

7. His cousin is running against one the greatest new congressman from Tenn.
He never looks like he is looking the camera or people in the eye
watch him.

I don't like the term 'uncle tom' but he is definitely an Edsel, a model
that was promoted and designed by someone behind the scenes.

He is manufactured.

5. exactly! good catch - the pic just struck me when I saw it
Barack looks so warm, and is looking right at Harold's face, and it seems like Ford's aloof and seems distant.

4. ty, I trust your opinion on this. I've wondered. At least 3 times I've seen him, and each time
he does nothing to impress me that he's trying to help Sen. Obama become the next President. I don't watch the TV like many get to, as I don't have cable, but from all the clips I've seen of him from late last year til now, I don't like him and he is very shifty and guarded.

6. I think Ford is desperate to distinguish himself apart from Obama. And he's doing it badly.
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 11:34 PM by writes3000
I suspect Ford is scared shitless because if Obama fails, it will reflect on his future. And if he wins, it will make things challenging for him in other ways in his home state.

The best thing he could do is strongly support Obama in all of the areas he agrees with. He doesn't have to scream that's he's different from Obama. And he certainly doesn't need to lecture Obama.

9. I don't agree with that.
An Obama win would help Ford. I don't have any doubt he wants Obama to win.

11. Not necessarily. In fact, in the South, there could be a backlash.
Just notice how freaked Ford was about the subject of racist ads in campaigns. He ran away like a man on fire.

Ford's future in the South is far more complicated than just what's good for Obama is good for Ford.

Ford bends over backward to lecture and warn Obama - and he usually goes even further complimenting the Republicans.

10. I don't think I would trust him either...there's something about him but I can't pinpoint it--
he never stands up or speaks out on Morning Joe. He's way too quiet. I do like to watch him, though. He does have sex appeal! lol:dilemma:

12. As a black person, I consider Harold Ford
a man who is secretly ashamed of his blackness. It's like he's so close to being white, but he's not... and it kills him.

13. ALSO...
I detest the term "Uncle Tom". I really do.

But I absolutely agree that Ford is not loyal or completely supportive when it comes to Obama.

And I want ALL of our Democratic spokespeople to be behind Obama.

I don't care for racialized attacks on black politicians etc that one happens to disagree with...whether the attacks come from the left or the right.

15. I hear you. And understand.
I just wish Ford would sit this one out because he's really not a comfortable, strong advocate for Obama.

Just my opinion.

I do NOT think this speaks to anything regarding his "loyalty" to black people, etc.

20. So, because he feels the spot is not racially motivated he's an Uncle Tom?
That's ridiculous. I saw it and I don't think it's racially motivated, does that make me a racist? They are saying he's silly, frivolous and a celebrity for no reason like Brittney and Paris, not anything racial. Now, I do agree that Ford is not a good Democrat, that he's a DLC corporatist and an up and coming Neo but I don't think he's an Uncle Tom for saying something that isn't racial, isn't.

22. The ad is stupid, but it's not racist
Not that I would put it past McCain to run a racist ad and I expect him to get to it, but this ad isn't it. It's silly to make assumptions like this about someone because they didn't think this ad racist.

23. Harold Ford is scum.
The ad may not be racist in the obvious sense for folks who aren't accustomed to facing racism that often, but others have a different take. These folks who make these ads don't get paid to make ads for no reason. They know what they are doing. They hire people to test these images and even certain words and they know what ticks inside of folks.

Now, back to Harold, I don't like using the term "uncle tom" either, but I will call him a COWARD because that is exactly what he is. He needs to lay off trying to lecture Obama about anything. He is always trying to give his dime store advice like it means a thing. He couldn't even win a state wide race in his home state. Obama mopped the floor with the competition in his state and is now the Democratic presidential nominee. Harold Ford can't tell Obama shit.

Harold Ford, with his low self esteem having, self deprecating and defeatist attitude, needs to get out of the way. We don't need Democrats giving more praise to the Republicans than other Republicans. He was the only sap sucker who praised John McCain's green screen speech the night Obama wrapped up the nomination. And his smarmy, sneaky grins whenever someone hits Obama with a low blow tell me all I need to know about this knotty head creep.
