TOP TEN CURRENT CELEBS
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 10:18 PM by Beetwasher
"Instead, the top 10, in order: Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, Angelina Jolie, Beyonce Knowles, David Beckham, Johnny Depp, Jay-Z, The Police, JK Rowling, Brad Pitt."

"So, they didn't pick other big celebrities, who were either men, or black, or married."

--snip--

Hmm, no Britney, no Paris. And yet, McCain claims:

--snip--

"We just got off a conference call with Camp McCain, defending their new ad comparing Barack Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears."

"They said they thought the ad was legitimate because Obama is a big celebrity (which happens to be what John McCain was, too, when he came home from Vietnam and started to build his political career), and Britney and Paris were Number 2 and 3."

4. Sorry to be this way
But ever since the Brittany concert at the 2001 Pepsi 400 in Daytona, she will always be Number 1 for me.

7. It's a weird comparison.
But imagine the uproar if they had chosen Tiger Woods or Oprah. That would have seemed racist too.

9. Heh? How So?
Err, would also sort of defeat the point. It's meant to prey upon racial fears. Black man-white, young, pretty white girl. Very simple and obvious.

11. I really don't know what they were thinking.
Let's see if there's a pattern of this kind of stuff. If so, then yeah. But I'll withhold judgment for now.

Remember that young Republican who compared Obama to Tiger Woods? There was some uproar over that.

18. I think another part was to infer Barack was substanceless
That's another Republican attack point. Blonde women who aren't really substantive (plus the old Blonde=Dumb. So I think there's more than the one racist level going on in the vid.

8. God, the man's a slimeball. He picked Brittney and Paris
because he wanted blonde white girls in his commercial with Barack, again just to scare white parents. What an asshole.

13. I can think of a few things:
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 10:35 PM by JackBeck
Either it shows how out of touch with current pop culture McCain and his campaign is when trying to reference something topical.

Along with that, it can also highlight how technologically ignorant his campaign is, since it's pretty easy anymore to create an ad, email it around to campaign principals, and change the celebrity figurehead depending on who is hot at the moment.

"South Park" has been able to stay more politically relevant than McCain's campaign.

But ultimately, yeah, the ad's a total racist swipe, a la Harold Ford.

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 10:38 PM by Beetwasher
That's for sure.

How this could be in doubt by anyone w/ a sliver of intelligence is beyond me. But hey, I'm an uppity asshole like that.
