Tapper: JMM Says Britney Ad Implies Obama Has a "Taste for Young White Women"
Prominent Liberal Blogger Says Britney Ad Implies Obama Has a "Taste for Young White Women"

July 31, 2008 7:02 AM

"I note with interest today, John McCain's new tactic of associating Barack Obama with oversexed and/or promiscuous young white women," writes liberal blogger Josh Marshall. "Presumably, a la Harold Ford 2006, this will be one of those strategies that will be a matter of deep dispute during the campaign and later treated as transparent and obvious once the campaign is concluded."

Continues Marshall: "the McCain campaign is now pushing the caricature of Obama as a uppity young black man whose presumptuousness is displayed not only in taking on airs above his station but also in a taste for young white women."

Others pushing this meme note that the notorious Harold Ford ad -- which featured an attractive young white woman looking at the camera and asking Ford to call her -- was put together by a group once headed by Terry Nelson, who was McCain's campaign manager for a time, though he left in the Summer 2007 purge.

The McCain campaign says that Nelson had nothing to do with this Britney/Paris ad, that it was put together by their normal team of Mike Hudome, Fred Davis, and Chris Mottolla.

And they say this interpretation is "ridiculous."

What say you?

2. Bill Press also has this interpretation.

It's weird that Jake Tapper is picking up on something Josh Marshall is saying, this of all things. I think that they also want to bate the Obama campaign into saying that it has racial implications (I think that Obama's "they're trying to make you afraid of me wasn't a response to this ad, like Ben Smith is trying to insinuate that it was), so the McCain camp can say "see, they think that EVERYTHING is about race!"

4. Is he gay, or does he want white women? Is he gay AND wants white women?
Boy, that McCain is one deep thinker.

6. I think the ad's message is
Obama is an empty suit. Both Spears and Hilton are viewed as dumb, notorious blondes without a brain in their head.

What the McCain campaign seems to be successfully accomplishing is giving fuel to the nation's fear of electing a black man president. Hopefully, the economy, the war and healthcare will win out over the fear, and people will elect Obama/Change.

God help us if they don't.

8. Mandingo!
And don't forget that we must never question McCaint's age, mental deterioration, cancer status, infidelity, military service record, corruption, or truthyness.

9. I think its a bit of stretch to make that connection in this case.
But if they were to actually show images of pretty white women reacting favorably to Barack (esp. blondes), it would be a different story.

A specific example would be some footage of Scarlett Johannsen beaming about Barack. Or maybe that photo he took after the workout in Germany with the pretty, starstruck blonde "journalist".

11. yep, good point.
I wouldn't put it past them to do more of this in the future, but I think this was more of the "empty suit" and "maureen down-ish emasculation of Democratic men" in that specific ad. But again, I might have to refine my theory if they do more Harold Ford-ish type stuff in the future.

12. The intent of the association is quite clear.
The dog whistling is in full force. The point of these sort of games is to not be overt.
