Obama sets small-donor record with nearly $32 million in June

USA TODAY's Fredreka Schouten reports on a new analysis from the non-partisan Campaign Finance Institute. The bottom line: Democrat Barack Obama set a new record last month in money received from small donors.

The group found that $30.8 million -- or 65% -- of the money the Illinois senator raised in primary dollars came in chunks of $200 or less. That's more than any candidate has received in small donations in a single month, the center says.

A third of the nearly $22 million Republican John McCain raised in June came in amounts of $200 or less. That's his highest percentage of small donors since January 2007, when presidential fundraising kicked off.

In other analysis of June financial filings, The Washington Post reports that former Hillary Clinton donors making their first gifts to Obama gave him $1.8 million and fundraisers for President Bush have raised nearly $30 million for McCain over the course of the campaign.
