White House Accidentally E-Mails to Reporters Story That Maliki Supports Obama Iraq Withdrawal Plan

White House Accidentally E-Mails to Reporters Story That Maliki Supports Obama Iraq Withdrawal Plan
July 19, 2008 1:29 PM

The White House this afternoon accidentally sent to its extensive distribution list a Reuters story headlined "Iraqi PM backs Obama troop exit plan - magazine."

The story relayed how Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told the German magazine Der Spiegel that "he supported prospective U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months … ‘U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,'" the prime minister said.

The White House employee had intended to send the article to an internal distribution list, ABC News' Martha Raddatz reports, but hit the wrong button.

The misfire comes at an odd time for Bush foreign policy, at a time when Obama's campaign alleges the president is moving closer toward Obama's recommendations about international relations -- sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, discussing a "general time horizon" for U.S. troop withdrawal and launching talks with Iran.

3. Chickens comin home to roost....but Al-Maliki may be a casualty
of it all. You can't take three billion dollars from the CIA and not have Poppy Bush sending the troops in for your ass. Now unless Gw exceeded his authority and has gone awry, Maliki needs to get to a safe zone (i.e., Iran, Egypt, Syria, etc) as soon as possible. Still perhaps Poppy is taking GW to the woodshed over Iraq. Thoughts?

12. I wondered about that too. The writing is on the wall and maybe pops sat him down and drilled it
into his thick skull.

5. That should have made the RNC stenographers (formerly: "reporters") heads spin...
No doubt they were thinking, "Wha...??? Do we run with this story that benefits Obama, or do we suppress it like we've done with all the other potentially-benefiting to Obama stories?" "It is from the White House!" "Oh, please, Karl...what are we suppose to do!!!"

What a dilemma...

6. when you read stuff like this

1) You laugh your sides out

2) Wish we had a parlimentary system so we could change when its obvious that leadership isn't working and not have to wait 4 years.

9. Hey, the "reporters" could have always
been checking out foreign news sources like Der Spiegle if they're really reporters.

But, how convenient to drop in their lap.

10. There is a larger strategy in play here
By doing everything Obama is suggesting we as a country do, Bush is taking away Obama's ability to argue those points. They are more or less attempting to take away any valid arguement that Obama may be wiser on foreign policy than Bush or Mccain. For those who pay attention, I don't think it will work. For those that only grab see headlines, it will. Either way I think it's the only chance the republicans have on the foreign policy front.
