Lifelong Conservative Activist Is Backing Barack Obama

I'm a lifelong Republican - a supply-side conservative. I worked in the Reagan White House. I was the chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for five years. In 1994, I helped write the Republican Contract with America. I served on Bob Dole's presidential campaign team and was chief economist for Jack Kemp's Empower America.
This November, I'm voting for Barack Obama.
When I first made this decision, many colleagues were shocked. How could I support a candidate with a domestic policy platform that's antithetical to almost everything I believe in?
The answer is simple: Unjustified war and unconstitutional abridgment of individual rights vs. ill-conceived tax and economic policies - this is the difference between venial and mortal sins.

4. Hers is a rather soft example though...
Ike credited his win to crossover votes from Democrats for Eisenhower... she noted this when she announced her support. I wouldn't call her a hard core Republican.

3. The Chamber of Commerce is pretty evil.
If either Clinton got endorsed by this guy they'd be flayed here. And rightfully so.

10. They are, for example major lobbyists against minimum wage.
They claim to represent the small business owner, but, somehow, what they want fits nicely with Exxon/Mobil, etc.

My polling firm did some work with them. They've also fought to ensure that a lot of businesses have exemptions from all sorts of ADA laws, health insurance requirements, safety requirements, etc.

13. Note that he does not endorse Obama's economic
plans. In fact he is saying that he is going against his own economic ideals because of the war and the lost of civil rights. He is saying that peace and civil rights being restored are more important than the economic differences he has with Obama. I don't think the Clintons would have been kicked for his endorsement under these circumstances. Remember, politics makes strange bed fellows.
