1. Is Vito Fossella running for re-election?
I thought he was brought down by scandal-an extramarital affair that was exposed.

13. thanks, AllieB
another Wikipedia boo-boo! While I was rooting around the internets for Fosella's replacement, I found this from June 22, 2008:

http://www.wnbc.com/news/16679611/detail.html

Frank Powers Sr., the Kings County and Richmond County GOP candidate for the 13th Congressional District and expected replacement of Rep. Vito Fossella, apparently died in his sleep Sunday morning, according to GOP Chairman Craig Eaton.

Powers was 67, reported The Staten Island Advance.

Powers, an MTA board member, was unanimously endorsed by the GOP less than a month ago to run for Fossella's job. Fossella said he would resign after a drunken driving arrest led to his public announcement that he had a child out of wedlock.

This was hard... I'll do my happy-dance if Dole, McConnell, Coleman, Cornryn go down... but Chambliss must suffer eternal damnation for comparing Max Cleland to OBL in his campaign.

14. Jeff Sessions.
He's the Mozart of ignorance. And evil. After Katrina, he sent someone down to the Gulf area, not to survey the damage done or aid in the recovery, mind you, but to find a wealthy person who had been killed. He wanted to use it as a talking point in the estate tax debate. Sick, huh?

"...On Sept. 9, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions called his old law professor Harold Apolinsky, co-author of Sessions' legislation repealing the federal estate tax, which was encountering sudden resistance on the Hill. Sessions had an idea to revitalize their cause, which he left on Apolinsky's voice mail: ' Jon Kyl and I were talking about the estate tax. If we knew anybody that owned a business that lost life in the storm, that would be something we could push back with.' "

108. In watching the Senate on CSPAN nearly every time he takes
the mic I can barely keep my composure. The lying, the deceit, the BS spin on everything it is abhorrent.

He was the first one I know of who brought up this drilling our way out of high oil prices. At the time no one else was talking about it. He brought it up in a debate in the Senate. I thought that is the most outrageous thing I have heard come out of his mouth. Yet the media and talk radio somehow still spin it as a good idea that is only not happening because of the Democrats. Crazy!

Edited on Fri Jul-18-08 09:37 AM by mtnester
because of this:

"Elizabeth Dole Tries to Rename the AIDS Bill After Jesse Helms "

July 16, 2008 5:09 PM

Oh my. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-NC, has officially requested that the ”Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008" be also named after the late Sen. Jesse Helms, R-NC.

"That is bizarre," Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., told me this afternoon when I told him this news. "That is absolutely bizarre. The Lantos-Hyde-Helms… the idea that anyone would want to do that is ludicrous...I would try to think of something that would be less appropriate, but even with my disregard for convention it would be hard to do that."

In the July 14, 2008 Congressional Record:

SA 5074. Mrs. DOLE submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by her to the bill S. 2731, to authorize appropriations for fiscal years 2009 through 2013 to provide assistance to foreign countries to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows: On page 1, line 5, strike ‘‘and Henry J. Hyde’’ and insert ‘‘, Henry J. Hyde, and Jesse Helms’’.

(snip)

Sen. Dole's press secretary did not return repeated calls for comment."

58. Ted fricken Stevens
The man behind the "internet is a series of tubes" gaff is also one of the most corrupt politicians of all time. If you thought James Traficant and William Jefferson were slimy, wait till you meet this guy.
He had his home raided by the FBI due to some kickbacks paid off in furniture and remodeling for his home, among other sins.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/07/30/breaking-sen-stevens-home-raided/

He is best known among Hurricane Katrina survivors for being the guy who blocked the bill for relief funding so he could get drilling in the ANWR.
http://www.counterpunch.org/stclair12282005.html
"There'll be no Katrina money without ANWR drilling,"---Senator Ted Stevens.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/laurie-david/why-alaskas-sen-ted-s_b_9382.html
He also threatened to resign if he didn't get his 450 million dollars for the Bridges to Nowhere.

Say what you will about Robert Byrd and the KKK, but Ted Stevens, along with newly deceased senators Helms and Thurmond, are the ones who wear the robes in the Senate.

132. He was the guy who said about the 2004 election (in the summer of 2003)
"It's all over but the counting, and we'll take care of the counting." (At a White House BBQ.)

Clip here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7dV67u370Pg

He is one of the biggest Bush suck-ups around. He's horrible on privacy, FISA, and Iraq. Plus, he's a major league A-hole. I recall a DUer, who was a constituent, printed a response he'd received from King when the DUer had sent King an anti-war e-mail. It was just a nasty, nasty remark -- unbelievable, coming from a congressperson.

From Wikipedia:

King has been criticized for his staunch support to allow the government to eavesdrop on American citizens without court-authorized wiretaps, for his support for the Iraq war, and his claims that "Iraq is 95% safe." In February 2006, King said that things were blooming in Baghdad and that being in Baghdad was like "being in Manhattan."<1>

In late August 2006, King endorsed racial profiling as a law enforcement tool. He proposed that people of "Middle Eastern and South Asian" descent go through additional security checks due to their ethnicity and religion, saying that all Muslims aren't terrorists but that all recent terrorists are Muslim (Newsday 8/17/2006).

In 2006, he came under attack by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) because he advocated profiling at U.S. airports.

Coleman for obvious reasons, namely that 99% wisecrack.

Porter because he's my district and he's the definition of a jackass. Every cycle he relies on contorting his opponent through disgracefully misleading commercials, ones that are ridiculed in the local media. This time he's up against someone very well known in Dina Titus. That's a plus and a minus but it would be incredibly sweet for Dina to dump him.

BTW, the Titus/Porter race is NV-3. It should be included on any list like that. It absolutely will be among the top 10 most scrutinized races in the country.

John Doolittle, who is retiring one step ahead of FBI investigators. On the Republican side, state Sen. Tom McClintock has about $117,000 on hand for the contest.

121. I guess the correct answer is Sessions
He's the biggest favorite. Someone already posted the incredibly lopsided cash on hand. On Intrade it's practically an out price, between 95 and 98% likelihood he'll be re-elected. That's about as high as Intrade goes. True odds are certainly higher than that, barring anything unforeseen regarding health.

If Sessions somehow loses, it's a tsunami that would take down almost everyone on this list.

One of the leading anti-choice Republicans on the Hill. Being challenged by Josh Zeitz, an early Obama supporter who has an uphill battle but is raising money and knocking on doors.

he were not returned to that chamber. It would be even better if a giant pteradactyl swooped down from the sky and carried the son-of-a-bitch far, far away and dropped him down the mouth of a volcano, never to be heard from again.

In the House, I'll go with the smarmy, cocky, and dangerous Steve Buyer (R-Indiana). Never did like that guy and I like him a lot less today.

149. Because for some reason the list contains Republicans
retiring from the House instead of those running for re-election.

151. Coleman and Bachman
Normie is nothing but an opportunistic tuchus-leker. The only thing he has ever believed in is advancing the position of Norm Coleman. Had we cannibals in Minnesota, Normie would be the first to promise them nice fat missionaries for dinner.

Michele Bachman is the craziest person I have ever seen in the public arena. Not just to-the-bone stupid, but absolutely 150% utterly batshit insane. She is a long, loud, horrible-smelling fart in the middle of a funeral service and a disgrace to humanity.
