McCain: Two gays only count as one parent, therefore they shouldn't be able to adopt

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/McCain_Two_gays_only_count_as_0715.html

In response to a question from a reporter about a quote in which Sen. John McCain said he didn't believe in gay adoption, the Arizona senator seemed to suggest gay couples who adopt children only constitute a single parent and therefore shouldn't be able to adopt.

Only Florida outlaws gay adoptions. Estimates suggest 100,000 children are in foster homes in the United States.

"I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption," McCain said in reply to a reporter's query.

McCain himself has an adopted daughter.

McCain then remarked that he and his wife, Cindy, were proud to be adoptive parents of a daughter born in Bangladesh, and he encouraged others to adopt. Asked if those adopting should be a "traditional couple," McCain answered, "Yes."

The responses were condemned by gay and lesbian groups.

4. Interesting. From reports, McCain lives in DC and his wife in Arizona
meaning his adopted daughter only has one effective parent.

9. Once again, Republicans don't have statistics on their side.
Studies (and I can link the direct peer-reviewed scientific studies if you're going to be a jerk and make me go home, dig up my book of statistics published by the ACLU, and post them here) show absolute zero connection to the gender of the parents. Studies show that children do better in homes with two parents (for a variety of reasons) but whether those couples are same sex or opposite sex makes no difference in every peer-reviewed credible study one can find.

If you really want to piss people off, there are quite a few studies that indicate that children actually develop slightly more well-adjusted with same sex parents!

10. McCain's quote=Yet another example of a rightwing asshole, sticking their nose where it doesn't..
belong. "Maverick", my ass. Maybe in 2000 (if that can even be believed), but definitely not anymore. And as the product of a single parent household, I take offense to his comments. I may not be perfect, but I think I've turned out pretty well. Kinda reminds me of that one speech of Romney's during the primaries. And they have the nerve to call Obama out of touch? That's just one way (being the product of a single parent household) Obama can relate to many people McCain can't.

Not to mention the obvious homophobia, but that's probably a pre-requisite to be the GOP nominee..:eyes:

so says the hound dog who dumped his first wife and kids to shack up with a 25 year old beer fortune heiress.

17. actually, 4 gays would still be one parent if they're still the same sex
now take a gay couple that is one gay man and one lesbian gal and you theoretically, in McCain's tiny pinhead of a mind, have one parenting couple

Great!

Better to languish in foster care than to only have one loving parent!

16. Maybe if 6 gays adoped a kid...maybe that would work for him. Or how about if 8 couples shared a
kid. Would that be 8 x better than 1 couple?
